The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Lies won't save you from the bomb that you just dropped
I'm standing shellshocked but I'm still here
And this to you is what I'm saying
All that's false will
Fade away
You run away from what you know will surely come
I will remember everything that you have done
And this to you is what I'm saying
All that's false will
Fade away
I'll say it again because
Who are you
To say to me
That I'm not all right
You don't know it's like
I'm shellshocked
And ripped apart inside
No I'm not all right
You don't know what it's like
Well yeah a change in character is great
And if it's what you need to say
It's probably what I need to hear
But never again in that way
I don't care what I'm doing that turning you off of me
It's my care for pursuing our friendship responsibly
That's why I need to reconstruct what happens subconsciously
So we don't continue to treat our silence so obnoxiously
Lies won't save you from the bomb that you just dropped
I'm standing shellshocked but I'm still here
And this to you is what I'm saying
All that's false will
Fade away
I'm standing shellshocked but I'm still here
And this to you is what I'm saying
All that's false will

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Just A Little Lovin'

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Very cool tune. He just got dumped - the bomb that she just dropped - and she's lying and pinning it on him like his character flaws are to blame. But who are you to tell me I'm not alright, you don't know what it's like to be me. In the end the truth will come out and the reason she dropped the bomb will be apparant, her false excuses will just fade away.
I'd say it's about dealin with problems in a relationship whether it'd be girlfriend/boyfriend or any other friend. It's not good to lie to any friend. Communication is key and essential in any relationship. Once people stop talkin' to each other, they drift away. Facing the facts and moving forward in a relationship is what I think this song is about.
This song to me is about that the truth will eventually come out of everyone. And that individuals are themselves and not someone else, everyone is different in their views from one another.
dude that is exactly what i wouldve typed
I don't think this sing is about girls, or relationships at all. It's about the breakdown if a friendship "It's my care for pursuing our friendship responsibly"
this song is brilliant and chronic future's best song off the album
This song can have many meanings. The band probaly wanted it that way. "The bomb" can be several things. I do think the song is giving the message that all lies come undone eventually.
My song ends with this(and then the slow part):
"Well yeah a change in character is great And if it's what you need to say It's probably what I need to hear"
If you need to say something, say it, don't lie.
i never really tried to understand what it means, because then i get too into it. i just listen and enjoy the song. this is by far one of the best on the cd
If you think about it, it could be related to WWI. At least in a metaphorical sense.
Shell shock is what soldiers in that war got after so much battle and shooting and stuff.
Bomb dropping, ripped apart inside, etc.
I see what you mean but i think what he's feeling is worse than shellshock and that is what he's comparing it too. having gone through this for the past three days i would know. when you lose the one you love, you're ripped apart inside and it kinda feels like you've had a bomb dropped on you
changing character is great LOVE That line its a sick song amazing band live its about dealing with alot of different problems i think its from a 3rd person perspective like just think this when you hear the song: when someone says they know how you feel you get angry and yell
and the sweet lullibuy at the end its so nice
