"Electron Blue" as written by and Mike Mills Peter Buck....
You're on your ear, the ocean's near.
The light has started to fade.
Your high is timed,
You found the climb

It's hard to focus on more than what's
In front of you, electron blue.
Adventure rings with a page.
And when,

It dawns on you, it singes blue,
Your buzz beginning to wane.

Adventure has laid its claim on you
It's all you want to do
You, you know where to run
You run electron blue.

And who am I?
I'm just a guy.
I've got a story like everyone

But in your eyes,
You looked surprised.
And didn't know where to run.

I looked to her
She's found the cure
Her future's already begun.

Tomorrow is gaining speed on you
It's all you want to do
You, you know where to run
You run electron blue.

You, you know where to run
You run electron blue.

So bide your time
You'll feel the climb
Your high it builds like a lightning storm

It sings like pearls
You know that girl
And no one is any the wiser so

As if on cue
Electron blue
Tomorrow is gaining speed on you
It's all you want to do
You, you know where to run
You run electron blue.

You, you know where to run
You run electron blue.

You, you know where to run
You run electron blue.

    "Tomorrow's gaining speed on you

As far as I am concerned those lines in particular explain the crux of the song. For this kind of person, its all about racing the hourglass, obtaining maximum 'fulfillment' within the shortest time span and via the shortest route possible. Leads to utter misery.

General CommentI think the "electon blue" is a reference to living life as if in a computer game and trying hard to find adventure and fulfillment in real life.

General CommentAt the Balloch concert on 18th June, when introducing the song, Michael Stipe said something along the lines of:

"This song is about a new drug called Electron Blue, and it's made of light. It's set in the very near future."

General CommentThis song is definitly about drugs, like most people pointed out.

"Your high is timed, you found the climb
It's hard to focus on more than what's in front of you"

This line describes the feeling of being high, where all you can do is focus on one thing because of the daze you're in.

    "Your buzz beginning to wane"

    Coming down, cooooooming down.

I'm not sure what exactly Stipe is trying to say with these lyrics, but they could be describing someone who's addicted to this drug, and only it can make them feel happy, and that drug use is the "adventure" that he talks about in the chorus.
