"Night Drive" as written by and James Christopher/burch Adkins....
Lay back baby and we'll do this right
There's blankets in back we can use
I'll start the car, but we'll stay in park
The cold can kill us before fumes

Now's the right time for a good song
Get something to say what I can't
Do you feel bad, like I feel bad?
Pour us a road, we'll both drink and drive

Kiss me with your cherry lipstick
Never wash you off my face
Hit me I can take your cheap shot
Leave you with the love we made

Come alive on the driver's side
So close I taste your breath
Your lips go dry, but they're sweet inside
I must go right to your head
It'd be easy if you'd get that
But three fingers point back to you
We could stay here
Stay out all night
No one will know us and the moonlight

Kiss me with your cherry lipstick
Never wash you off my face
Hit me, I can take your cheap shot
Leave you with the love we made

I set my watch by street side clock
A needle in echo groove
You pierce my heart like a willing arm
Your ticking makes my blood move
There's no way out this fade out
Be Happy to get what you do
Make him notice with both fists
'Cause quitting alone will never get you dry

Never get you dry

Give Me Everything You've Got Now
I don't feel a single thing
Drag me out into the cold rain
Let it hover over me

Kiss me with your cherry lipstick
Never wash you off my face
Hit me, I can take your cheap shot
Leave you with the love we made

Hit me, I can take your cheap shot
Leave you with the love we made

Hit me, I can take your cheap shot
Leave you with the love we made

General Comment"2. "cold can kill us b4 fumes" (alcohol will kill you b4 drugs will?)"

    WHAT?

Since no one else seems to be able to (and I apologize to the few who have tried for my generalization), I shall now attempt to decipher this oh-so-subtle song.

"Lay back baby and we’ll do this right
There’s blankets in back we can use
I’ll start the car, but we’ll stay in park
The cold can kill us before fumes
Now’s the right time for a good song
Got something to say, what I can’t?
Do you feel bad, like I feel bad?
Pour us a road, we’ll both drink and drive"

Sounds like him and his girl are out in a car, alone, somewhere. He'll start the car so the heat comes in, since it's cold outside. The cold outside would kill them in less time than the fumes from the engine will. The blankets in the back are for the act of love. The whole song gives the impression of it being the couple's first time together, it's very important to both of them. At the same, time, it seems a little reckless (hence the 'drink and drive' bit)

"Kiss me with your cherry lipstick
Never wash you off my face
Hit me, I can take your cheap shots
Leave you with the love we made"

Umm... seems pretty self-explanitory to me... moving on...

"Come alive on the driver’s side
So close I taste your breath
Your lips go dry, but they’s sweet inside
Wine must go right to your head
It’d be easy if you get mad
But three fingers point back to you
    We could stay here
    Stay here all night
No one will know us and the moonlight"

Sounds like she's coming over to his side of the car, eh? Probably they're getting into the act, a bit of making out. It would also seem that his lady is a bit of a lightweight, alchohol-wise.

"I set my watch by street-side clock
    A needle in echo groove
You pierce my heart like a willing arm
Your ticking makes my blood move
    There’s no way out,
    This fade out
Be happy to get what you do
    Make him notice...
    With both fists
Cause quitting alone will never get you dry"

I'm kind of at a loss here. I'm think this might be more in the throes of passion. Hence the disjointed-ness of the bit at the beginning. If anyone has any better ideas, let me know.

The continual references to alchohol seem to be both literal (they have wine with them, and they're drinking it) and metaphorical (the intoxication of the entire event)

But yeah, overall, I'd say the song is about having sex, most likely for the first time with a given partner, in the back of a car. Or possibly the driver's side.

In any event, it's a great song, it's very beautiful. To the people whining about songs about sex and no substance, or whatever... shut up, please. Just because a song is about sex does not mean it can't be a deeply meaningful, emotional, loving song. I intend to use this on a mix I'm making for a girl I know that likes JEW, because I know she loves the song. And she knows what it's about. We've discussed it at length (yes, this is what I do on dates... it works surpisingly well...) So shove it.

    Thank you, and goodnight.

General Commentit's a dark love song about an addictive relationship.
the guy is an asshole and he knows it. they want to love each other but it doesn't work. it is an unhealthy relationship.

he wants to try to do things right, and for things to work. they both do. but knows better that it can't happen the way she wants it.

he feels bad, because he's a jerk and has done shitty things to her.
"pour us a road, we'll both drink and drive" she lets things continue, rather than just being done with him, she "pours the road" as in , starts things up and gets the idea of them being together , which leads to him going along with it all... and they get caught up in things, that is the role she plays in the addiction. she starts it up because she loves him even though she knows better, he's emotionally/psychologically abusive. they can't really follow that road she "pours" (happiness together) , hence the "drinking and driving" they both get wrapped up in fantasy land pretending it can work.

they have a strong sexual chemistry. he can take her cheap shots because he knows he deserves them, and just wants to enjoy the good between them while it lasts. he knows it won't last though.

the "lips go dry" is probably kind of in reference to her realizing things just aren't right because of all the things he's done to her. and the "wine going to her head" is like him saying she is crazy to be doing this and loving him after everything shitty he has done to her.

she wants to put blame on him, but he puts it right back on her because no matter what, he can always say "you asked for it" basically - because she is still with him. she keeps starting it all back up again. addicted. so to him she deserves what she gets and is just as destructive by participating in an unhealthy relationship.

he wants the love they're sharing in that moment to last. and that in the moments like this, only they know the passion they share. no one else would understand their craziness. to everyone else its just an unhealthy relationship. but they love they share in these moments is inexplainable , only they really understand.

he knows the "up" stage in the relationship isn't going to last because their relationship is an emotional rollercoaster. this moment isn't going to last. she's ticking because he knows any moment she'll come to her senses once again and want to leave, she resents him, she can't handle the emotional and psyhological abuse of being in a relationship with someone dark like him.

the darkest part of the song to me is him saying "your ticking makes my blood move" - getting her angry and upset IS WHAT HE LIKES. he's an asshole, but he can't help it.

be happy you get what you do - probably means this for both of them. he's an asshole so this is probably showing his narcissism here. but i think it's also him saying it to himself, because he knows he's lucky to get anything at all from her.

"make him notice with both fists, cause quitting alone with never make you dry" - not sure what this means exactly. but i think it means if she tries to end the relationship, it doesn't work. "get you dry" like not being addicted to alcohol, but being addicted to EACH OTHER. she can't quit him on her own, she has to get him angry enough to want nothing to do with her. because if she keeps coming back, he will keep allowing it to continue. so they have to quit together for it to really end the addiction.

and he knows this is going to happen so he wants her to give him everything she has got.
i think this means both that he wants to enjoy the loving moments they have while it lasts. but also to "let him have it" like he deserves her fighting back, he WANTS her to fight back. she's taken too much from him... his arrogance will make him abuse her love. he loves her but they can't be together because he hurts her.

General CommentPersonally, I would've sequenced the album so that this was the closing song, as it would leave me with the same emotions after the CD has stopped that "My Sundown" did... I absolutely love the beautiful sonic touches on the chorus:
"Kiss me with your cherry lipstick
Never wash you off my face
Hit me, I can take your cheap shots
Leave you with a lovely name"

It makes the hairs on my neck stand up! :-)

General CommentFew corrections. I believe it is:

Wine must go right to your head
It'd be easy if you get mad

    Instead of:

I must go right to your hair
It’d be easy if you get that

To aligatoree - What he means by the "three fingers" bit now that you can see the corrections is that if the girl gets mad, she would most likely give him the finger. In in doing so, she would have three fingers pointing back at her (hold up your middle finger and you'll see!)

    Excellent song.

General CommentI think the song is about romance and temptation. "We'll pour us a road, we'll both drink and drive" .. because they know that what they're doing is considered bad and sinful, but doing it is so appealing that the lyric "We'll both drink and drive" in a romantic sense sums it up completely. I think it's about letting someone know you love them for just one night. I think it's sort of linked to the other song on the album "Just Tonight" which I think is about the lust fading away (with nothing left), but hey - that's just my interpretation.

General CommentThis song is about cheating or having sex with someone you shouldn't be. He is in the car with a friend who is intoxicated, and he is wanting to have sex with her, but he wishes she would say no so he can just take her home... but she isn't saying no, and she is coming on to him as well.

he is stuck because he wants it to happen, but knows it shouldn't. no one will know us and the moonlight, he is trying to keep it a secret. Personally I think it's either about cheating on someone, or maybe just having sex with someone that has big consequences like ending a friendship.

at the end of the song, he gets out of the car into the rain to think about what he has done, but he doesn't feel a single thing.

General CommentI really like this song.

Although some of the lyrics are a bit rap-ish >
"Lay back baby and we’ll do this right "

But it kind of reminds me of My Sundown, only not quite as good.
