When you're riding the rails with those wide open eyes,
Well, there's one old south paw you will always fight.
And alone on a worn-out throne
is the reigning queen of the questions
Why we blind-footed toddlers ever started out.

So don't get itchy with me
When I goose-step
Across the kitchen floor
You know I still adore
All your mother's old-fashioned ways
I'm so impressed that you hear
My inventions, and that it matters more
Than what you saw with your eyes

Go along with the plan
Your head will still be there where you put it
Under the bed with the ice cream you could never find
And tonight you go to bed and dream
All the world to be what you want it,
You got the girly draw now flaunt it,
And keep them all checking their watches
When you're out tonight

So don't get itchy with me
When I goose-step across the kitchen floor
You know I still adore--
Are your eyes changing hands?
I'm so impressed that you hear
My inventions, and that it matters more
Than what you saw with your eyes

General CommentThis reminds me of a scene in Apt Pupil, where Brad Renfro's character makes Ian McKellen's ex-Nazi character strut around the room in his old military regalia. I don't really see a connection, though.

General CommentAlso live he says. "So don't get into it with me"
and I'm pretty sure thats the line, not "So don't get itchy with me"... but whatever, cool song.

    General CommentRoon,
Totally my favorite line in this song and....dare I say it......maybe the best Shins Verse!??! I dunno, i just really love it.

Anyway, I think this song is about ANYTHING but marching unless its used in a metaphoric way for following a revolving path in an "up and down" relationship. Maybe this will spark some more discussion for this GREAT and underappreciated Shins tune? Hope so.

General Commenta fantastic song... my person opinion- there is a guy and a girl that have a relationship- but not an official exclusive one. shes been cheating around- so when he finally sees someone else, she gets... eh... itchy? haha. i dunno. hes saying, dont get mad, because you have all these guys that youre with that adore you- and the one time that one of them moves onto another girl you get... itchy.

    uh-huh.

    itchy.

General Commentoops- and as for the meaning of goose step, im guessing hes referring to sneaking back after cheating around. shes being hypocritical, basically.

General Commentyeah basically this song seems to pretty much be about a relationship in which both of the partners are fooling around. it sounds like the girl was the one who started all the cheating and now that he's fooling around on her she's jealous and asking questions which makes sense in the first verse "on a worn out throne is the reigning queen of the questions". in the second verse i think by itchy he means like don't get bitchy with me when i tip toe across the kitchen floor, kind of like sneaking in. when it says that i adore all your mother's old fashion ways i think it means that her mother is the old fashion type that doesn't cheat. i think that the girl maybe really popular with the guys and she's i guess you could say "all that" and she knows it.

And keep them all checking their watches
    When you're out tonight

that line pretty much explains that she is.
