"There is No Such Place" as written by and Richards....
There is no such place,
O yes I have seen it too
Just a little different from how you do,
A river winding blue among the dunes
And a marble bed
A sun that doesn't set but settles.
There is no such place.
If I lower mine to yours
Would you kiss me on the face?
If you're looking for an unmarked place,
There is no such place

Blasted in appearance and
A composite of fearful minutes
Frozen in the waking instant
Longing, things I long for,
Peaceful nights,
Strangers at the door,
O come in, come in,
You've been here before.
There is no such place,
So perhaps we have a reason
For our long and falling face,
Above all it would be warm
But we would keep our heads all
Clear as Winter, storms would be
A sight to make us shiver
But without the chill
Of thinking all is hither-thither

Longing,
Things I long for,
Peaceful nights,
Strangers at the door,
O come in, come through the door,
You've been here before,
You've been here before
There is no such place,
O yes I have seen it too
Just a little different from how you do,
A house upon a hill with no windows
Just a can upon the sill
To catch your tears
To feed your garden.

General CommentAny song writer that can make such a hauntingly beautiful song such as this, and use the words 'hither thither', is alright in my book.

My take is that the place that doesn't exist is a future that two people planned together but ended up planning different futures which would never intersect. The fall out is heart wrenching.

General CommentPure beauty. Think Nick Drake meets Badly Drawn Boy meets Nick Cave (lyrically). This is a majestic piano driven song by a totally under-exposed group. A song to close your eyes to when you are by yourself and just want to reflect. Song for a lifetime.

General CommentI would say . . . This is a song about innocence. We all close our eyes and imagine some wonderful place where nobody has ever done anything wrong, but "there is no such place". The line that sells it for me is ". . . woulkd you kiss me on the face? If you're looking for an unmarked place, there is no such place." Which speaks to our sexuality and how when we fall in love and want to give ourselves to somebody, so to speak, every part of our body has already been touched. The lack of innocence is then the reason for "our long and falling face".

    General CommentBeautiful.
This, One Crowded hour and Asleep in perfection are my favourite augie march songs.
This does remind me of nick cave quite a bit.

General Commenti get something similar to certainlynotharry when i hear this song.. i think of the innocense. the idyllic past of our childhoods, a bit of a fairy land, where everything is sunny we haven't had our hearts broken etc. but that's not where we are, instead were caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday concerns and office buildings etc

General CommentWhen I first got this CD when it came out, I listened to this song about 15 times in a row. It strikes me every time as a perfectly beautiful, heartfelt lyrical piece. I love the quirky lyrics so much.

It's a constant source of rage (and of pride) to hear people going on about how great Augie March are after they released One Crowded Hour. I was loving them way before that!!!

General CommentIt's very much about a kind of 'happy place' you go where no matter hoe bad life around you may be, this place is always there and full of beauty and innocence.
I agree with PhilVet - One Crowded Hour is possibly augie's most mainstream song, which is how they got known in mainstream circles, but i went to a show where they played, and this was the opening number, and me and my dad were in awe because this is one of our ABSOLUTE favourite augie songs, and everyone was yelling the whole way though "play one crowded hour!!"
There is so much more to Augie than One Crowded Hour, even though it is one of my favourites, along with this and Asleep in Perfection.
    hm.
