If I was a rich man
I'd buy you some shoes
Tall boots for all the dirt you walk through
What would that do?
Enable you to deal
Without schooling you on how to touch what's real
And if I was a smart man
I'd tell you everything that I knew
And give it to you every time you need a talking to
But what would that do?
Teach you my guidelines
So you can be a cheerleader at your game on the sidelines
And if I was a driver
I'd keep my headlights on
To see the difference between right and wrong
I'd wear my seatbelt even when I'm in park
Cause I don't trust the other fools that cruise through these
parts
And if I was a better cook
I'd hook up a feast
Set a table full of food for the children to eat
I encourage the nourishment so we can breathe
With the knowledge that we got something accomplished

Chorus:
And if I was Santa Claus, I'd fight for the cause
Wouldn't expect nothing in return
I'd give you everything you want, I'd be everything you need
So you can take my hand and I can take the lead

And if I was an honest man
I would stop writing songs
I'd break for a nervous breakdown for breakfast
Tell everyone I knew to stay away from making music
It ain't nothing but a confusing mess (confusing mess)
And if I was you, I wouldn't hear a word I said
Wouldn't trust nothing to start it up inside my head
I'd make a conscious effort to live instead
Of trying to kill the monsters that reside underneath the bed
And if I was a hurt man
I'd find a way to put my faith
Into a woman that could take me from today
Maybe
I need somebody that could save me

From the parts of myself that keep making me crazy
And if I was a wise man
I'd climb to the top of the mountain peak
To think about strength versus weakness
I'd find a point that rests a couple of feet above your head
And figure out how I could try to help you reach it
(Ho ho ho)
And if I did have a choice
I'd never want to live forever
Just let me have a voice so I can make my points
I can't imagine running a race with no finish line
Just let me keep my pace and make to most of my time
I love giving but I'm bad at receiving
The truth is, I'd prefer to be the one bleeding
But I'm a paranoid that stays between play and work
Cautious and aware, 'cause I'm afraid of being hurt
Which brings me to the issue
And that would be this:
How often must I ask myself why I exist?
I feel like a freak, this world is a circus
Just trying to find myself as well as my purpose

Chorus:
And if I was Santa Claus, I'd fight for the cause
Wouldn't expect nothing in return
I'd give you everything you want, I'd be everything you need
And you can take my hand and I can take the lead (2x)

I got nothing but gifts
Keep it up in my wits
Got me drunk on the fifth
And now we're stuck in a ditch
And as dumb as it gets
I'mma run you some feebs (?)
I wanna touch your lips
I wanna rub your hips
Put a glove on the fist
For the love that exists
We'll keep bumping the hits
To get my bucket of chips
From the Bloods and the Crips
To the skateboarding chicks
Put the Atmosphere on your Christmas wishlist (2x)

(Ho ho ho ho)

Song MeaningFirst of all this song it is so god damn dope i can't even explain how much i love it. Okay I'll try to unfold it. I believe that Slug, in his own way, is stereotyping people among us, not by race, but by status upon their peers. The chorus is stereotyping Santa Claus saying that he fights for the cause expecting nothing in return meaning that he lives to help others and it defines his existence, all the other "And if i was..." parts in this song have the same idea.

"And if I was an honest man
    I would stop writing songs
I'd break for a nervous breakdown for breakfast"

This is my favorite piece of the song, slug is saying if he was truly himself, (which society never taught him to be because of all the manipulation and lies in the world that are not visible to the human eye), he wouldn't push his ideas on people and reveal or even lie about his feelings. He would break for a nervous breakdown for breakfast meaning that every day he would have a nervous breakdown because of all the problems in the world and personal issues he suffers.

General CommentNo comments?? This song is awesome! It was the first atmosphere song I ever listened to while I was driving with my older brother. I think the lyrics are incredible. I can't imagine how Slug writes such excelent song lyrics!
    Genius:
"I'd Break From a Nervous Breakdown For Breakfast."
I'm going to use that line a little more often :)

General CommentThis is such an amazing song. It's just saying that the music industry can corrupt you and that the world is more than just success.

General CommentIs it really about the music industry? Elaborate please.

I think he's trying to say that the world has taught him how to be all kinds of things but hasn't taught him to be himself. I really don't know though.

BTW, its not feebs, its fibs, like lies.

One more thing, someone explain this line "I'd Break From a Nervous Breakdown For Breakfast."

    Shouldn't it be brake?

General CommentAlso, why does he become so much more organized and under control on the very last section?

General Comment1st verse is about learnin for youself

"but what would that do?" etc

and he talks about his insecurities with women, keepin them at distance
"I love giving but I'm bad at receiving
The truth is, I'd prefer to be the one bleeding
But I'm a paranoid that stays between play and work
Cautious and aware, 'cause I'm afraid of being hurt

General CommentI have heard this song many times, but never really felt like I understood it until recently. A good friend is in trouble, partly by chance and partly by her own choice. I feel like I'm the only one who cares to help her, but that it's just not in my power to do it. I'd love to be able to say a word and make things ok for her, but I'm helpless. If only I were santa claus.

My InterpretationThis song and "The River" are my favourite two Atmosphere songs. I think that this song is one that can apply to anyone, it's the classic example of when someone feels as though they could really be a saviour for someone else but they're powerless to do so (much like the way jabberwockysuperfly feels right now), whether it be down to social groups, race, class etc.

Santa Claus is a metaphor for being at the top of the food chain, for having influence, for being famous, for having the ability to do things that normal people can't do.

In terms of Slug, I think that he is directing this towards women, society and Hip-Hop, or basically, the whole world.

This line here: "And if I was a better cook" reminds me of a line in the song "The Ocean": "If I could cook half as good as you look, I'd trade my headphones and my notebook for all the time you took up to shine". The "if" clause (no pun intended) appears many times throughout Atmosphere songs, notably in "The River".

This is probably my favourite verse out of all of the music, let alone Atmosphere, I have ever heard:

"And if I did have a choice
I'd never want to live forever
Just let me have a voice so I can make my points
I can't imagine running a race with no finish line
Just let me keep my pace and make to most of my time
I love giving but I'm bad at receiving
The truth is, I'd prefer to be the one bleeding
But I'm a paranoid that stays between play and work
Cautious and aware, 'cause I'm afraid of being hurt
Which brings me to the issue
    And that would be this:
How often must I ask myself why I exist?
I feel like a freak, this world is a circus
Just trying to find myself as well as my purpose"

It speaks for itself, but for want of a definition, he's basically explaining why he is unable to carry out all of the actions that he spoke of before, which is why the beat slows down. Slug uses "if" to signify that he is lacking in these qualities that he speaks of and this verse, or to be specific, the middle part of the verse, explains why he lacks in those qualities:

"I love giving but I'm bad at receiving
The truth is, I'd prefer to be the one bleeding
But I'm a paranoid that stays between play and work
Cautious and aware, 'cause I'm afraid of being hurt"

He then explains why he wants to be Santa Claus:

"Which brings me to the issue
    And that would be this:
How often must I ask myself why I exist?
I feel like a freak, this world is a circus
Just trying to find myself as well as my purpose".

I can't explain the final stanza since I don't really know what Slug is talking about.
