"Persona" as written by and Johnny Burke Jimmy Van Heusen....
Every morning I put it on, I walk outside and I am gone
And I don't seem to mind anymore, I can't think what it was like before
I wore it all the time.

[Chorus]

In the evening I take it off, but there's another one underneath
And I can't seem to find the bottom of the stack
I might just lose my mind and never get it back
But at least I'll get inside

[Chorus]

At least I'll get inside

[Chorus]

There's a feeling that I get sometimes, It's so small that it's easy to hide
It's like a howling voice from the distant past
It seems I've got no choice, when I come to this
It's building up inside

[Chorus]

It's building up inside

[Chorus]

General CommentI think this song is a mask that the narrator wears...pretending to be someone else. Towards the end of the song, it's starting to hurt him that he has to wear a mask all the time - "It seems I've got no choice, when I come to this", and that he can't just be himself.

General Commentto me....i agree with mike...its bout a mask...n identity that someone has...n its more then one....the person wears so many different mask...at first he didnt care...he was alright with it...hence "And I don't seem to mind anymore, I can't think what it was like before
I wore it all the time."...in the middle of the song its starting to bother him....n he wants to change...thats why in the begining of the middle he says "In the evening I take it off, but there's another one underneath
And I can't seem to find the bottom of the stack"...he cant seem to find who he was originally...n towards the end....its like he is bout to lose it all...n just quit...know wat i mean...

General CommentThis song IS about masks. "Persona" is Italian (I think it's italian) for "mask".

General Commenti think that the mask stuff is deffinatly on track, but also that he has some sort of a deformity ( either physical or mental) and no matter how much therapy or times he washes it, its always going to be there. Sounds like a scar that someone gave him when he was younger, and the anger towards that person keeps getting stronger but the scar wont go away.

General CommentWell the song is obviously about masks, but it's more of a metaphorical mask that the narrator wears. It's also a song about isolation from others and acting the way you want people to see you; for instance, "In the evening I take it off, but there's another one underneath
And I can't seem to find the bottom of the stack" at least to me seems to be like he comes home from work where he acts a certain way to get by, or to impress the boss or whoever, then comes home and puts on a different mask and acts according to what he considers to be what he should being acting like at home. Even acting with certain people, you act differently around them, and thus showing a different mask every time. By the end it starts getting to him but there's nothing he can do to make the feeling go away. At least that's how I feel about it.

General CommentIashman is nearly dead on.

Whether you believe it or not, everyone has a mask they put on depending on what your doing. If you are at work, you have your 'be nice to people' mask on. if you are at a formal party, you have your 'don't be rowdy' mask on, when your out to dinner you have your 'don't be a slob' mask on, etc.. etc..

Everything you do you have a certain way of acting that is not like yourself. How many times have you seen someone walk up to you and you say 'man I can't stand this guy' and then once he is there next to you you are all like 'hey buddy!'. You sit around saying 'man I can't stand my boss', but he comes around and you are 'yes sir' around him, once he leaves, you remove your 'be friendly to boss' mask...

At the end, he tries to remove the stack of masks he is wearing to get down to what he truly is. Problem is he starts bleeding to death when he does this. Thus the true meaning of the song. You CAN'T take these masks off, because if you do, everything around you will crumble once everyone knows who you truly are and how you truly act. So he HAS to wear these masks, these different personalities, in order to survive.
