I thought I'd start this simple song
With something you could sing along
Like, "Nah nah nah nah nah nah"
But then I felt a bit cliché
I started beaten path that way
And besides, it didn't get me very far

I guess the well is running dry
I'm not surprised
It's been thirteen years of lies
Running at the mouth about
These lovers I can't live without
Well, I'm not exactly hunting them down

Down and out and overweight
Under the influence of three years straight
Of drinking on the job
If it's not some love affair
It's a song about the great despair
Of the loner at the end of the bar

Well you are what you are
You are what you are
You are, you are
You do, you do
Nah nah nah nah nah nah

A hundredth verse
Same as the first
I'm a dictophone of drunken slurs
Press rewind, it's a new album
Hot off the press
Hey, but this guy sounds depressed again

So you can never drop this drunken bit
And the fits of pain you still stomach
Well, it's for the love of the song
Oh yeah, the song
Oh yeah, the song
I thought it was
I thought it was supposed to be a singalong
Oh yeah, the song
Oh yeah, the song, the song, the song
The song, for the love of the song

    General Commentthis song is great.

it doesn't have any of the flaws I sometimes find in his writing, it's powerful and cathartic. it doesn't wallow in self-pity or bitterness, even though they are part of the song, it's really well-crafted.
I wondered why he doesn't always achieve such standards, this song shows he's very able to do it.
Not the only song, there are a few that share the greatness, and the imperfect ones are mostly still good, but that0s the reason why he frustrates me sometimes, because if it wasn't clear he's good I would give up on him. But he is, and I think he could be even better. This song is, musically and lyrically the proof of it.

So it's frustrating. Maybe it's just that I don't "get it", I dunno.

General CommentProbably one of the ebst good life songs i have found. actually, one of the ebst tim kasher songs ever made, no exaggeration, its jsut about how its like, your creativity can only go so far to the point where you aren't even yourself in the lyrics really, you jsut write what you think, and co-opt someone eleses views. Very interesting.

General CommentI love this song, simply because it's so damn self-aware. the first stanza is just golden.

General CommentThis song just breaks my heart. It seems like he thinks that his albums are the just same thing over and over again. Like he doesn't know how fucking brilliant he is.

This is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.

General CommentAbout resignation and failure to live up to expectations. Heartbreakingly honest.

General Commenti love the self-referentialism of mentioning "off the beaten path" and "hey but this guy sounds depressed again".
