"First Straw" as written by and Nicholas Lofton Hexum Doug Martinez....
Oh a whole new way of looking at things
The way you react to phone rings
The way it feels when you just let it flow
Sometimes I wonder just how it could be
You take every bit before we see it off the rails
I think that you should know

You never cease to amaze me
You keep me from going crazy
And that's one thing I know for sure
Sometimes I see just how it all will be
Take every bit it's so easy the first straw
And this I know for sure

(Chorus)
The first straw
So small it seemed impossible
The next straw
Vanished like shooting stars that fall
The last straw
There's no reason for getting there at all
Yeah

No reason to take it there at all
Yeah

The last straw can land in your mix
Your best day could be apocalypse
Nobody pay attention to the first straw
It seems the last one is all we ever saw
The first straw's a metaphore I pick up myself
It tells me something by showing me something else
I think that you should know

Chorus

No reason to take it there at all
Yeah

Everyone reacts when it gets to the weight of breaking their back
I won't let that be us cause the long side never gave back
Yeah

Chorus x2

General CommentI love this song! The name "First Straw" caught my attention ever since I saw it on 311's site. This is the meaning I get from it: You know how there is that phrase "that's the last straw!" Well this song is about a dating relationship between a guy and his girlfriend. Too often we don't resolve relationship problems when they first arise, we wait until the problem becomes so big that we cant take it anymore and then we say "that's the last straw that broke my back" and we explode with anger and ruin a good relationship and then break up. In this song, Nick and SA explain a better way to handle problems in a dating relationship. They say to watch out for the "First Straw", or the first little problem that arises, and resolve it while it's still small, rather than let it become a bigger problem. That is what keeps a perfectly good loving relationship from going wrong, and I would agree with Hexum that there is no reason for getting to the last straw stage at all. I would quote some of the lyrics, but the lyrics and song imagery are pretty self-explanatory. This song is so deep, yet so simple...and absolutely beautiful! 311 keeps adding to the list of their awesome reggae love songs along with "Purpose","Amber", "Give Me A Call", their Cure Cover, and "First Straw" is yet another memorable one! Musically and lyrically, 311 is the most original band I have ever liked and they are my fav! Reggae On 311!...errr I mean...Rock on 311! LOL j/k

General CommentI'd have to say this is one of their best. Kind of sounds like Barenaked Ladies, hm? As for the meaning of the song, in general its just someone talking about how cool his girlfriend is. Catchy tune, I like it, good start to summer song. :)

General CommentI love this song and the more I think about it the more it reminds me Amber and what Amber is REALLY about (not a girlfriend). Either way I LOOOOVE this song as with all other 311 "Love song's" whether they be about a girl named Mary or a plant called Mary........
