"Dead Gardens" as written by and Tuomas Lauri Johannes Holopainen....
The story behind the painting
I drew is already told
No more tear stains on the pages of my diary
Tired by unable to give up since I'm
Responsible for the lives I saved

The play is done
The curtain's down

All the tales are told
All the orchids gone
Lost in my own world
Now I care for dead gardens

My song is little worth anymore
Time to lay this weary pen aside

The play is done
The curtain's down

"Where are the wolves, the underwater moon
The eleventh, the haven of youth
Lagoons of the starlit sea
Have I felt enough for one man's deed?
Or is it time to challenge the Ancient of Days
And let the virgin conceive"

All the tales

General CommentThis song is basically Tuomas expressing a lack of inspiration - writer's block, like some of you said.

"The story behind the painting I drew is already told."
He feels he can't come up with anything original.

"No more tearstains on the pages of my diary."
There has been no sadness or drama in his life to fuel his emotions and make him want to create music.

"Tired but unable to give up since I'm responsible for the lives I saved."
He feels a responsibility to his band and to his fans to at least try and create a new song.

I think the song's music fits perfectly with its lyrics. One of my favourites from Once! \m/

General CommentAt least to me it sounds like/looks like a sever case of writers block
"Time to lay this weary pen aside" that to me says: 'Okie so either the pen ran out of ink or I can't write anything thats me anymore'

*shrugs* that's just my humble opinion

General CommentI totally agree with Dark Artist about the meaning of this song. For me, it is not about love at all.

General CommentThis is a good song, I really liek the guitar riffs and the chorus... ALso I think it effectively describes how the loss of innocence and the meaning to our life can make us live linger on a constant state of melancholy, "caring for dead gardens", meaning the beauty of past expiriences we cannot posses once more.

General CommentThere's only one remaining, but there's nothing left to do. World is dead and everthing has ended and the last one is damned to stay in this empty place for eternity.

She show is over, the last one switches the light off.

General CommentIts like she's come to the realization that life has no meaning without love. Most of the song sounds like she's depressed for some reason and thinks life is pointless. The poem at the end however makes me think she's just broken-hearted.

General CommentLol, I love this song and I know it has a deep meaning, but for now it has just a basic meaning for me "The play is done..The curtain`s down" I'm still at school and I have to write a play for Drama lol it has to be all like full profeesional and blah and I just can't wait until 'The play is done and the curtains down' hehe

General CommentIt sounds to me like someone who's done great things, but now all of the excitement is over and all that's left is the mundane consequences of everything she's done, and she just wishes it were all over (not life, but responsibility).

General Comment.....Tuomas completely spoiled this song for me....I found an interview with him, I'll try to find the link, where he was talking about the song-writing process for Once. He said that he sat down, ready to write, and nothing came out. Pissed off, he jotted down whatever came to his head....And this was the result...
Meh, I'll come up with my own, less mundane explanation....
