"Treat Yo Mama" as written by and John Charles Wiltshire Butler....
Don't call me hippy cause the way that I look ,
'Cause I got a recipe and you know I can cook
And I come forth with only good intent,
You know I am Heaven bound but I'm surely hell bent
On getting the job done like I know I should,
Get the job done like my momma told me to.
Only one thing can remember she said,
You gotta earn all of your respect.

And I don't care what race or what colour or what creed
All that shit don't bother me,
Only one thing that you should not forget ,
You gotta treat you mama with little respect
And I don't care what fashion the styling of you hair,
I don't care about the car or the clothes you do wear.
Only one thing that you should not forget ,
You gotta treat yo mama with respect.

Treat yo mama with little respect
You better treat yo mama with little respect
Slap you upside down the head
You better treat yo mama with little respect

I got a couple of friends up in a tree in Northcliff
You know they're doing their part
You know they're doing their bit.
Trying to save our Mother from all this greed
You know they know what she wants,
You know they know what she needs.
I got a couple of sisters in South Australia,
Stopping the Uranium from coming up,
Oh yeah man you know they know what she needs
They're stopping all of that government corporate greed!

General CommentYeah, I too viewed the song as being a "take care of mother earth anthem" the most obvious being the friends in a tree in north clifton. he also starts the song by askin people not to call him a hippie, which is a typically a stereotype given to greenpeacers. also, the word recipe can be construed as being a reform or a way of changing something. plus the fact that the song is called "treat yo mama" meaning mother nature. and the uranium should be the final indication that this is a song that promotes protecting/respecting mother nature. or maybe im just crazy...

General CommentI beleive the fundamental message of this song to be that regardless of who/what you are, what you do/don't have, the environment is more important than all else and therefore must be respected and protected before our bank accounts.

I also believe it is important to note the extended metaphore which is used to liken mother nature to human mothers, both of which being nuturing and caring. This helps creates the message that we must respect mother earth as we respect our "mamas".

General Commenti'm very happy for john now he's made it to mainstreem, but the thing I cant stand is people thinking they understand when they dont. I was on my bus and asked people what they thought this song meant and thought it was just about treating your family well. I dont understand why people at highschool cant yet see what metaphors are!!!

General CommentYou are joking right? :|

It's pretty obvious that its about 'mamma' earth!

    Kind of gives it away!

General CommentYa, the meaning is pretty much right there.

I LOVE the version off the "What You Want" EP. the country folk version. But the Sunrise over Sea version rocks hard too.
