You told me you loved me
I know where and when
Come sunrise, surprise surprise, the joke's on me again.
I know you don't love me,
You know i don't care.
Keep it hidden better.
Did I say the world is fair.

I thought I was just the guy for you and it would never end.
I thought we were supposed to be like glue,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
I thought you were my boyfriend.
Love or not, I've always got ten guys on whom I can depend.
And if you're not mine, one less is nine, get wise,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
I thought you were my boyfriend.

I just hope you're happy,
Stringing me along.
While you're stringing.
I'm here singing this, my saddest song.
I wish I could see you,
I wish I could sleep.
Should I freak out?
Should I seek out
Someone I could keep?

I thought I was just the guy for you and it would never end.
I thought we were supposed to be like glue,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
I thought you were my boyfriend.
Love or not, I've always got ten guys on whom I can depend.
And if you're not mine, one less is nine, get wise,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
I thought you were my boyfriend.

I wanted you tonight.
I walked around a lot.
Wishing you were here to keep me from sleeping
With anyone who might
Want me or even not.
Some guys have a beer and they'll do anything, anything, anything.

I thought I was just the guy for you and it would never end.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
I thought we were supposed to be like glue,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
I thought you were my boyfriend.
Love or not, I've always got ten guys on whom I can depend.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
And if you're not mine, one less is nine, get wise,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
I thought you were my boyfriend.

I thought I was just the guy for you and it would never end.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
I thought we were supposed to be like glue,
I thought you were my boyfriend.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
I thought you were my boyfriend.
Love or not I've always got ten guys on whom I can depend
(thought you were my boyfriend)
And if you're not mine, one less is nine, get wise
I thought you were my boyfriend.
(thought you were my boyfriend)
I thought you were my boyfriend

Hah! I absolutely adore this song. It came on while me and my boyfriend were kissing, he stops and says how much he loves this song, and starts singing it.

It's an amazing song, good vocals, good story, and yeah it's a gay love song! I'm really glad that you can't sit there and try to say it isn't.

This song is best listened to when you're having a total adrenaline rush. This is my "badass" song.

Nothing to interpret about this song, but it's a beautiful song even to a straight guy like me.

I like this song because it is straightforwardly a "gay song," and yet anyone can enjoy listening to it and can sympathize.

Am I right in thinking "I wanted you tonight" and everything after it is not in the version on i? It doesn't sound familiar. I love this song. I always sing the "love or not" part over and over.

p.s. I also love songs that can't be explained away as "well... maybe he was writing from a female perspective."

Couldn't agree more... I'm a straight guy, but nonetheless, it bugs me when people try to make it seem as though he's singing from a women's point of view. He's simply NOT! It's a gay love song, and an amazing one at that! He specifically says "I thought I was just the GUY for you..." And yeah, that "Love or not" part keeps coming out of my mouth at the strangest moments...

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
