The cold concrete cuts against her back
And her spirit spills with blood onto the pavement
Hands tied so tight behind her neck
And a silence falls, and everything changes
And everything dies, to you nothing's alive, to you anymore
I guess you've gotten more than you might have wanted

If I could take your pain away
I would scream for you
I would bleed for you
So you'll never feel this way
Again when you're in my arms
I would scream for you
I will bleed for you

She drowns herself until the images erase
But the skin is bruised all along her thighs
Nightmares repeat refrain the memories remain
In mental photographs haunting all the time so
She shuts her eyes, to you she tries to hide
From you, she falls asleep into dreams where she is safe

If I could take your pain away
I would scream for you
And I'll bleed for you
So you'll never feel this way
Again when you're in my arms
I would scream for you
I will bleed for you

Put the weight on my shoulders
And the pain in my heart
Tie the knots in my stomach and you'll let it tear me apart.
So tear me apart.
So I could be everything you need

And this silence strips me bare,
and your body pins me down.
I've never been so scared to breathe,
afraid to make a sound.
And all I know is you'll never let me go..
Just kick and scream, bite and bleed,
and make believe it's all a dream.

I think that this song is written from the point of view of someone who's girlfriend or someone they love has been raped. The first verse is kind of describing the actual event taking place (the lyrics are "Hands tied so tight behind her neck"), and the way it kind of kills her inside, "And her spirit spills with blood onto the pavement," meaning as she bleeds and experiences this, she is losing her "spirit." The next lyrics are "a silence falls," not a siren falls, which symbolises the end of the event happening, and "everything changes," because of this terrible experience. "And everything dies, to you nothing’s enough, to you anymore," shows how she feels dead inside now and nothing means anything to her. Oh yeh and its not "I guess you bellied more," its "I guess you've gotten more." The chorus is the person who cares about this girl saying that they would gladly suffer teh way she is, so she wouldnt have to. The next verse says "she kills herself until the image is erased," which I think means she is indulging in self destructive behaviour, maybe cutting, or drinking until she forgets what happened to her, but she cant forget because the physical evidence is always there, "the skin is bruised all along her thighs." This line is the indicator that what happened to her was definately rape. The rest of this verse is just about how she cant escape the mental images or the memory of her attacker ("from you she tries to hide"), and all she can do is sleep and be safe, because when shes concious all she can do it think about it "haunting all the time." The last bit is the guy who wrote it saying that he cant be what she needs now, because she's too damaged by what happened to trust and love the way she did, but he wishes he could accept her pain for her, even if it "tears him apart", so he could once again be everything she needed. There is also a last verse which wasnt included, "And this silence strips me bare, and your body pins me down. I've never been so scared to breathe, afraid to make a sound. And all I know is you'll never let me go.. Just kick and scream, bite and bleed, and make believe it's all a dream."

This also fits in with the idea of rape, I'm not quite sure whos perspective its from though, maybe the girls, or him imagining it.....?? Anyway, those are my ideas!!

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
