"In The End" as written by and Christopher John Cheney....
Well there's something that I really
Need to say
Have you ever wondered why the
Truth is hard to say
Why must it be this way
A broken deal
And now it's time to pay
Trying hard to understand
What happened yesterday
But it's the game we play
I see the red light signal
Calling me home the red lights are
See the red light and they're
Calling me home
The powers above us
Show that you love us
Don't take me away
In the end it's just another day
And there's no explanation
Or a plan that you can make
And you can't hide away
Well you can try and plan
Tomorrow's news today
But everything that you want
Is not gonna go your way
The end isn't far away
Need to say
Have you ever wondered why the
Truth is hard to say
Why must it be this way
A broken deal
And now it's time to pay
Trying hard to understand
What happened yesterday
But it's the game we play
I see the red light signal
Calling me home the red lights are
See the red light and they're
Calling me home
The powers above us
Show that you love us
Don't take me away
In the end it's just another day
And there's no explanation
Or a plan that you can make
And you can't hide away
Well you can try and plan
Tomorrow's news today
But everything that you want
Is not gonna go your way
The end isn't far away

yes, anyway. i think its about how you can't plan things that are going to happen and you can't change the past so you just have to live day by day and take things as they come and take responsibility for what you do...
or not..i dunno
This song, lately, has been on repeat on my stereo...I think the meaning has already been said well by ninjamonkeys and CoinXOperatedXGirl .
Now, I think that the other comments here have a pretty good general idea of what the song is about. If i were to sum up this song i'd say that it is about dealing with life and how confusing ("trying hard to understand what happened yesterday")and frustrating ("have you ever wondered why the truth is hard to say? why must it be this way?")it can be sometimes and how sometimes there is just no avoiding the crap that comes at you ("there's no explanation or a plan that you can make and you can't hide away") and you aren't always going to get what you want ("but everything that you want is not gonna go your way")but in the end that's just life and you need to deal with it.
that is what the general concept of the song is but as a songwriter i know that many songs are often about something specific and then generalized to make them more relatable to the audience. If i had to take a stab at what this song is really about i'd have to say it's about job layoffs or getting fired from a job over some sort of misunderstanding or something that wasn't your fault in a "shit happens" sort of way. I say this because the part that says "powers above us show that you love us don't take me away" would probably be viewed by many as some sort of religious appeal to god to not make you die for your sins or something. but judging by songs like "how do we know" and "raise the alarm" this doesn't seem to be the type of band who would write about something like that. other possible "powers" that the song writer could be referring to is the government or the higher ups in a company and since this band has a lot of songs about work ("long live the weekend", "roll on", "i want a day") i'm guessing it could be about working in a place and knowing that you won't be working there much longer and it's not going to be your choice or just finding out that you lost your job. it could all fit if you look at each verse:
verse 1 - about how companies will often lie about layoffs coming and then suddenly roll out the guillotine and cut 50 people at a time and how sometimes the reasons for the layoffs can be corrupt. for instance, they say they are losing money when really the people in charge are pocketing it all.
verse 2 - the part about broken deals could be referring to the contract signed at the beginning of employment and now they're breaking the deal and giving you a package to compensate.
verse 3 and 4 - about how you couldn't really do anything to avoid it and it's not what you wanted but that's just how it is sometimes.
anyways. i'm not saying that's what the song is about it's just a possibility. it could just be about the general meaning described earlier or it could have a deeper meaning. there are a lot of songs out there that are about death or breaking up that are based on events where no one died and no one broke up.
