"I Play Dead" as written by and Don Clark Ryan Clark....
Play dead again. It just might stop before the end.
If I pretend you may not see the pain I'm in.
So close to me, can't tell what I'm supposed to be.
Don't stop to breathe, can't bear to think what you might see.
This tourniquet, these blessed hands around my head
So I can keep from...

Bleeding.
I've got to find a way to stop before it starts.
Finding its way through my veins right to my heart.
I never thought it something everyone could see.
And it kills within me.

[Chorus]
I won't, I won't leave without a trace.
I won't be erased.

It's in my head, I can't forget what you once said.
The words I read, the fractured soul that I can't mend.
Right here with me, killing the void I used to be.
Remembering through fading sparks of memory.
Two broken hands lift seven wounds and fight to stand
To keep the lungs from..

Caving.
I've got to find a way to stop before it starts.
Finding its way through my veins right to my heart.
I never thought it something everyone could see.
And it kills within me.

[Chorus]

Turning. It's moving. Escaping right through me.
I care not. I bleed not. For you I believe not.
I play dead.

I see this song as being mostly about regret. It's like when you keep doing the same sin over and over and you feel worse every time.

    "I won't leave without a trace. I won't be erased."
I also get the feeling like the singer is afraid to die without making a name for himself. He doesn't want to be forgotten.

General Commenti agree with Kel-El this song has something to do with being depressed or suicidal thoughts and such... and then in the second verse it seems the person is thinking back remembering something he had been told from a friend, or read from a book or bible or something... i really dont understand this song.... but at the end it seems as though they are hinting that the person is numb and doesnt know what to feel or think?

General CommentThis is also about the crucifixion of Jesus.

"This tourniquet, these blessed hands around my head"
It's about the crown o thorns that Jesus wore.

"Two broken hands lift seven wounds and fight to stand
To keep the lungs from caving"

Isn't this one obvious? It's Jesus' wounds from the crucifixion. I believe the lungs caving in when you are crucified.

General CommentThis is possibly my favorite DH song. The song is about a person who pretends everything is okay with their Christian life, but in reality are struggling or perhaps have never even had a sincere salvation.

The chorus, I believe, is God's promise that he will never leave us nor forsake us no matter how many times we "play dead".

The second verse is just awesome. It is the person remembering what it was like to be close to God and remembering what Christ did. "Two broken hands lift seven wounds and fight to stand to keep the lungs from caving." That's an obvious reference to the Catholic tradition of the seven wounds of Christ and the song is Christ on the cross, pushing himself up to keep his lungs from collapsing.

General Commentwhat most of you people say seems to me to be somewhat contradicted by the part of the song that says
"Turning. It's moving. Escaping right through me.
I care not. I bleed not. For you I believe not.
    I play dead."

i dont really understand how that part fits into the song, can someone plz explain this to me, becuase it seems... dont really know how to describe it, just different...

I don't really get that part either... But I think that what Ryan (The lead dude) said was that this was a song about APATHY (Hence "Playing Dead"). Ryan said that sometimes he doesn't care about things he thinks are trivial, and that it's good to a certain extent because he is not very stressed about things. Sometimes, though, the apathy extends to other parts of his life and he becomes apathetic about things he should really care about. Don't know if that helps at all...

And yeah, there a a bunch of Biblical metaphors in here pointing to Christ on the cross.

General Commentbrave boys? im sorry did i miss something? i always thought they were cowards. u must not be a christian, if u really know what they did that day. anyhoo, it almost sounds like hes too afraid too admit hes christian in front of someone. he may not be livin a Christ like life and if they found out they would ridicule him for not only being christian but also for not following right. "i wont be erased", i think it means erased from the book of life, he wont leave without making an impact on someone elses life by getting them to follow christ, but hes not doin so well himself so its hard for him to do that. the last part is him almost giving up on himself, thinkin he cant do it. he plays dead to christ, thinkin theres nothing God can do for him and too afraid to know that He can. but i dunno
