"Goodbye" as written by and Patricia Griffin....
Occurred to me the other day
You've been gone now a couple years
Well, I guess it takes while
For someone to really disappear
And I remember where I was
When the word came about you
It was a day much like today
The sky was bright, and wide, and blue

And I wonder where you are
And if the pain ends when you die
And I wonder if there was
Some better way to say goodbye

Today my heart is big and sore
It's tryin' to push right through my skin
I won't see you anymore
I guess that's finally sinkin' in
'Cause you can't make somebody see
By the simple words you say
All their beauty from within
Sometimes they just look away

But I wonder where you are
And if the pain ends when you die
And I wonder if there was
Some better way to say goodbye

General CommentThis song is about Jeff Buckley. Not many people know that but it's true. Jeff has inspired many artists and many songs. PJ Harvey's Memphis is about Jeff. Also Chris Cornell's Wave Goodbye, The Cocteau Twins' Rilkean Heart... Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead had Jeff in mind too.

    General Commentjrw1980,

You can add Aimee Mann's "Just Like Anyone" to that list too.

General CommentI think this song is about... death, obviously, but I guess the person singing never said goodbye the way they want to, or at all. It's kind of like that moral I learned when I was ten: "Treat each person like it was the last day you'll ever see them." I try to live like that because if someone dies, then I'd feel really guilty about not saying goodbye to them.

Anyway, it's also about masking inner pain. She doesn't want to accept the fact that the person she loved is really dead.

This song is actually really depressing.

General CommentIt's my understanding that this song's about Kurt Cobain's death, but I may be wrong.

General CommentI used to think this song was about the suicide of a friend. But now I think it's about how suddenly a relationship can end and how long it can take you to stop grieving...if you ever can. "And I wonder where you are and if the pain ends when you die" to me means that I will never forget you and until the day I die, I will feel the pain of losing you. I wish we could have said goodbye in a better way. I think you are a beautiful person and regardless of how we ended, I hope you will know your words will always be with me...be cherished by me.

General CommentTo me, it seems to be aimed at the survivors of one who has passed away,
by their own hand in "Self Murder-Death", it's a recovery song for the
friends & family, of a SUICIDE VICTIM, friend, of whom they had watched
the pain and turmoil, sinking away in ebb and flow of disturbing saddness
in the long battle of trying to control the mental illness.
Where's their Spirit? Did they finally find 'Peace' from the sickness of
their suffering pain, which eats away at their Heart & Soul, in their daily
    battle for sanity.
That it takes time to get through Grief, to realize they are gone & won't be
back again, and that, no matter how hard you might try... you can't always
stop or change another person's will or destiny.
This is an especially difficult & emotional song to the person, who knows in
their heart, that Suicide will be Their Own Final Act, when all hope is gone,
it will be the last grasp, at a sense of control. Two more lines from "When It
Don't Come Easy"... 'Tonight I cry for love I've lost, & love I never found'
Another song with similar expressions is Lucinda Williams "See What You Lost
    When You Left This World"
