They call me Robert Petry and I live in New Rochelle
With my wife Laura and son Richie but now
My life's a living hell cause

I tripped over the ottoman
One too many times
I tripped over the ottoman
Until I lost my mind...

I was head writer for Alan Brady
Maybe you've seen his show
It's now funny and it makes my ears bleed
This week's guest star isn't Danny Thomas
Our special guest star is Death!

Once I laughed at Buddy's jokes but
Now my life's a living hell, 'cause...

CHORUS

Morey Amsterdam can make a sane man crazy
Morey Amsterdam can make a nice guy kill
Morey Amsterdam can make a sane man crazy
Morey Amsterdam can make a nice guy kill

What did you bring me Daddy?
What did you bring me Daddy?
What did you bring me Daddy?
Well, I BROUGHT YOU DEATH!

General CommentIn the background when they sing "I brought you death," you can hear Richie shout "oh boy!" As a big Dick Van Dyke Show fan, I seem to remember him yelling "yay" more often in response to Rob bringing him something, although he may very well have said "oh boy!" sometimes.

Song FactTo further expand what the previous commentator said, and to assist people in future generations: this song is largely full of references to The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Robert Petry was Van Dyke's character, and Morey Amsterdam played one of his coworkers. In the show's intro, sometimes he tripped over his ottoman and sometimes he didn't.
