The chords we play,
ways left to communicate.
These roads are paved with plans we've made,
and your headboards never felt so safe.
Well they'll reach our graves,
where your friends and I will kill the lights,
and hide, oh what a nice suprise.

Dont, dont tell me when its coming (no)
Dont, dont i just want to see if for myself.
Dont breathe, dont make a sound,
cause the song wont stop till the tape runs out.
When melody has nothing to hold,
I'll be the last sound that you hear,
as your eyes close.

And these chords remain,
we'll use them to exploit the friends. We've since forgot those friends we've lost,
you all know just who you are.
Cause I've since made graves,
but im too scared to etch the names for fear that im the one whos changed.

Dont, dont tell me when its coming (no)
Dont, dont i just want to see if for myself.
Dont breathe, dont make a sound,
cause the song wont stop till the tape runs out.
When melody has nothing to hold,
I'll be the last sound that you hear,
as your eyes close.

The thought of death it scares me to death,
and i dont know why, i dont know.
It's just too much to never wake up.

Dont, dont tell me when its coming (no)
Dont, dont i just want to see if for myself.
Dont breathe, dont make a sound,
cause the song wont stop till the tape runs out.
When melody has nothing to hold,
I'll be the last sound that you hear,
as your eyes close.

General CommentAt first I had a hard time understanding these lyrics:
"These roads are paved with plans we've made,
and your headboards never felt so safe.
    Well they'll reach our graves,
where your friends and I will kill the lights,
and hide, oh what a nice suprise. "

I didn't get the "well, they'll reach our graves"
But (I think) he's talking about the roads that they've paved, which is a symbolic for the road of life. And I think he's being sacastic when he says "where you friends and I will kill the lights and hide. oh, what a nice surprise" because it's like throwing a surprise death party? I guess I don't really understand that line as much as I though, but I still think it's meant to be sarcastic/ironic.

yeah. I wish someone else would post what they actually think. The "Oh, I love this song" posts really get on my nerves.

General CommentThis whole album is about leaving high school, the insecurities/faults of adolescence, and the move on to bigger things.

This song is about losing in touch with old friends. We all go through renaissance periods, and the friends you have now will not be the friends you have 5 years from now.

The graves he sings about are not posthumous epitaphs, but rather buried relationships. The dynamics have changed, and he can't explain why. He perceives a difference, but he doesn't know who changed first, or when the change took place. No one does.

Times, they are a changing. Just another musical testament.

General CommentI also took the meaning of this song to be about not fearing death.

The chorus alone and one of the last verses makes me believe this song is just about the fear of death.

"The thought of death it scares me to death,
and i dont know why, i dont know.

General Commenti agree with madgester. i think when he talks about death, he's talking about the death of a relationship.

    good song overall.

General Comment"these roads we've paved with plans we've made" is the journey of life and the song is reffering to falling out of touch with friends, and he's afraid that it was because of him: "but i'm too scared to etch the names, for fear that i'm the one who's changed"

    General Commentwell.
i think its simpler than it looks, if you just read it properly.
"These roads are paved with plans we've made,
and your headboards never felt so safe.
    Well they'll reach our graves"
he's saying that the plans they made will reach their graves - i.e the plans won't ever be carried out.

the second verse, the 'etching the names ... i've changed' bit, sounds to me like he's worried that although he thinks his friends have changed, and the plans they made will go to THEIR grave, because he'll still do them, he's scared that maybe its HIM that's changed, and not them.

but thats just how i see it.

General Commentthis is by far my favorite format song and i think maybe cuz i just graduated though that it is about the death of so many relationships you dont wanna see them end or write anyone off but you tend to lose contact with a large number of friends when it ends and i think this is about it but im probably wrong
