Fuck you, you're drunk and acting tough
I know you're sad you're not the only one
Who feels like that now

And maybe anger is your only choice
But maybe heart and fist and human voice
Might be the better way
Be the way

Chorus:
Cause we, we will still need a song
To carry our love away
To carry it away
We will still need a song
To carry our hearts away
To carry them away

Don't let another tear be in your eyes
We can die in peace knowing we tried
To change our own ways

The poets let a generation down
And modern music could be the healing sound
It's the only way
Only way

Cause we, we will still need a song
To carry our love away
To carry it away
We will still need a song
To dance on our wedding day
To carry it away

And we will still need a song
(we will still need)
To carry a song (carry a song)
To carry a song

And we, we will still need a song
To carry our hearts away
To carry them away
We will still need a song
To dance on our wedding day, yeah
To carry it away, yeah

(Last chance for feeling sad
I'm tired of feeling down)
(Last chance for feeling sad
I'm tired of feeling down)

This will be your last chance
Cause I'll never again feel down

(Last chance for feeling sad
I'm tired of feeling down)

Cause we, we will still need a song
To carry our love away

(Last chance for feeling sad
I'm tired of feeling down)

We will still need a song
To dance on our wedding day
To carry it away
We all need a song…

I am going to with improvised on this one. I saw Hawksley live and he explained that this song was written about one drunken night. I am paraphrasing her but he said he was fed up with the world's injustices and didn't see the point in making music anymore. Making music seemed trivial when he looked at the bigger picture. But his friend convinced him that music, song and celebration were important and that music plays a role in sweetening our world. What's the use in fighting and advocating for a world that isn't pleasant to live in? Then this song was born.

i think this song is about how a lot of music today is really loud and angry sounding, and the culture connected to the music is about getting drunk and fucked up, and hawksley is saying okay, you're sad but get over yourself "you're not the only one that feels like that now". he's saying musicians should express themselves in positive ways, "modern music should be a healing sound", and we will always need love songs: "we will still need a song to carry our hearts away... we will still need a song to dance on our wedding day". at least thats what it means to me.

Hawksley wrote this song after one night of drinking. He was feeling really terrible about the world around him, and told his friend that he was done with music. The friend turned to him and said "Yeah, but we will still need a song" This seems to be a song about pushing past feeling apathetic, and creating something beautiful.

Sure this song points out that modern music isn't all that it could be that is not what the song is all about, it is more or less despite everything negative or wrong that in life you may try to change it all doesn't matter because you just need that song to carry you away.

I didn't really think of that as the main point. I figured that it was about a girlfriend that he's fighting with as they're both drunk (probably because whenever I get drunk I act tough and later get sad). I thought that they still needed a song, because even though they fight, they're still in love, hence the "to dance on our wedding day". I'm probably terribly wrong, but that's what the piece means to me at least. Beautiful and catchy, no matter what the main point.
