Hey man I've got what you need
And have you ever wanted something so badly
That it possessed your body and your soul
Through the night and through the day
Until you finally get it
And then you realise
That it wasn't what you wanted after all
And then those selfsame, sickly little thoughts
Now go and attach themselves to something
Or somebody new
And the whole goddamn thing starts all over again

Well, I've been crushing the symptoms
But I can't locate the cause
Could God really be so cruel?
To give us feelings that could never be fulfilled
Baby
I've got my sights set on you
I've got my sight set on you
And someday, someday, someday
You'll come my way
But when you put your arms around me
I'll be looking over your shoulder for something new
'Cause I ain't ever found peace upon the breast of a girl
I ain't ever found peace with the religion of the world
I ain't ever found peace at the bottom of a glass
Sometimes it seems the more I ask for the less I receive
Sometimes it seems the more I ask for the less I receive
The only true freedom is freedom from the heart's desires
And the only true happiness this way lies

This song is off-the-charts fantastic. The very beginning is a bit odd, but the lyrics are about as profound as they get. The music is great, and Matt Johnson sure sings this one like he means it. Wow. There isn't much to interpret, just the essence of man laid bare.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
