There's a flame that leads all souls astray
No one's safe from its tender touch of pain
Everyday it's looking for new slaves
To celebrate the beauty of the grave

We are like the living dead
Sacrificing all we have
For a frozen heart and a soul on fire
We are like the living dead
Craving for deliverance
With a frozen heart and a soul on fire

Again we're falling for disgrace
And hate will shelter us from the rain
We are enslaved by the sacred heart of shame
And gently raped by the light of day

Addicted to our divine despair
The venom of the cross we bear
The guilt will follow us to death

ok i usually hate it when people do this but i think i can explain it better this way

There's a flame that leads our souls astray (Sex is leading us from what really matters which is love) No one's safe from its tender touch of pain (once you realize that you are being used are hurt and there is no where to hide) And every day it's looking for new slaves (sex is a sin and its an adictive sin that many people commit every day when they arn't married that is) To celebrate the beauty of the grave (realizing that the relationship is over and you are glad)

We are like the living dead (we are walking mindless people) Sacrificing all we have (Giving all we own and have) For a frozen heart and a soul on fire (for in the end we get a broken heart and still feel the love) We are like the living dead (we are walking mindless people) Craving for deliverance (hoping someone will save you from) With a frozen heart and a soul on fire (a broken heart and still being in love)

And again we're falling for disgrace (and in the end we are loosing all respect being called a slut or a whore) And hate will shelter us from the rain (the fake love is comforting cause we are scared to be alone) We are enslaved by the sacred heart of shame (we are slaves to sex and we are ashamed but we do it anyway) And gently raped by the light of day (and when its over we are stripped of our pride)

Addicted to our divine despair (we are adicted to sex even if it ends up shitty in the end) The venom of the cross we bear (The hate we have for our partner we have to live with) The guilt will follow us to death (and we dont like to have it taht way and its gonna haunt us till death)

With a soul on (with our life in) Soul on (life in) Soul on (life in) Fire (love) Soul on fire (Life in love)

I don't know if that makes sence but to me it did while i was making it and i hope to fuck this works

despite having a fairly unoriginal riff, i still think this song is pretty awesome. it's one of my favorites, i'd say. as far as the meaning goes, i couldn't even begin to explain half of the lyrics, but i'm fairly certain that a soul on fire would be somebody who is in love. this, to me, is one of many HIM songs about the futility of either love or life.

Again mixed messages about love and religion("the venom of the cross we bear"). Em..don't know what it means but it's still fantastic.

I think it's about how Ville really wants to see the movie 'Deliverance' again, "craving for deliverance" But he cant stop watching trashy b-grade zombie movies.

"Sacrificing all we have For a frozen heart and a soul on fire We are like the living dead Craving for deliverance With a frozen heart and a soul on fire"

This part is about how he is sacraficing watching a decent film like deliverance, 'for the so good its bad' b-movies.

I think its how when you get your heart broken, you still love and care about the person. "With a frozen heart and a soul on fire."

it s about love.. HIM practically writes all love songs.. their symbol the heartagram means love and death.. the heartagram basically describes what their songs are about

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
