My king, hear my plea as I kneel before thee
In the last hour of my watch I have fallen asleep
When darkness came, I did not protect them
When they were struck with panic, I did not admonish them
And when death came, I was too late to save them
Do not hold me accountable for their deaths
Do not forsake me in my darkest hour
For darkness comes to me, rebellion strides with me
And I feel death following me

“Open your eyes and then you will see
that their deaths were merely an illusion”
You must know of what I speak…”
Death is only an illusion!
“…and the wrongs you have done already have been forgiven,
although it saddens me to see you like this…”
I already have been forgiven!

Although my King has shown me mercy,
how come I can't forgive myself?
For the crime I have committed,
I should have been punished by death

General CommentAnd thus I may be the first one to add my comment to the lyrics of Slechtvalk.
I really fucking luv this band lads, they're still not at their best... But they're bloody Dutch!!!
Come on? That's gotta have some credit?
Anyway, this song is about a criminal(or murderer). He/she didn't wanted to die, and begged his/her king not to punish him/her. The king let know that when you open your eyes, death is only an illusion; there is an afterlife and they will live on.
But the problem is that the 'I'-person still doubts if the king did the right thing... Can he/she forgive him/her-self?

General Commentit's a servant of the king that didn't do his job (he sinned). so he asks the king to forgive him. the king forgives him. but the servant still feels guilty. "Although my King has shown me mercy how come I can't forgive myself? For the crime I have committed I should have been punished by death." he knows he should have had to die. and death is not just death. "that their deaths were merely an illusion". there's more after death, it's not over.
