The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Big blue in a gasfield, you caught me lyin'
Pathetic religion of sex and cryin'
I nailed the door shut to leave you blind
I nailed the door shut for peace of mind
You were the best love I ever had
You hit me high, you hit me low
Time doesn't slow down for those who dream
I wake only to hear this scream
Hot and cold in the goldmine, the diamond legs
After she hit me off, I just had to beg
I nailed the door shut to leave you blind
I nailed the door shut for peace of mind
You were the best love I ever had
You hit me high, you hit me low
Time doesn't slow down for those who dream
I wake only to hear this scream
You were the best love I ever had
You hit me high, you hit me low
Time doesn't slow down for those who dream
I wake only to hear this scream
You were the best love I ever had
You hit me high, you hit me low
Time doesn't slow down for those who dream
I wake only to hear this scream
Love is the only incident
An infatuation
Is this sweet manipulation?
Well, I was frightened myself
What is love?
It's a fine inclination
A lovely retardation
What is life but a reality vacation?
Indulging operation
What is love?
The worthiest damnation
Sweet temptation
What is love?
Pathetic religion of sex and cryin'
I nailed the door shut to leave you blind
I nailed the door shut for peace of mind
You were the best love I ever had
You hit me high, you hit me low
Time doesn't slow down for those who dream

i really love the end of this song.
the whole thing is amazing.
I hear "you were the first love I ever had" the first time that line is said, and then "best love" the second time. But maybe I'm just relating it to myself... it's quite poignant to me, and I'm sure a lot of others, for just that reason.
And it is completely like their other songs: confusion over love.
wow..this is the best song. "you were the best love i ever had you hit me high, you hit me low" siiigh. i love it.
such a beautiful song.
times a million and then some.
so catchy. i always have this song in my head!

i love this song so much. it is amazing in everyways. it's very unlike all their other songs. i like the change. ima robot is simply amazing.
and plus, i'm writing my english essay about this song =]
what does he mean by " You hit me high, you hit me low" ?
Yeah, I agree it's pretty cool. As for the meaning of it, I think it might be he really loves a girl but he cheated on her? And 'You hit me high, you hit me low' eh, I haven't actually thought of it yet. It could be something icky, but it could also mean that she was for him during good and bad. Oor that she made him feel good ('You hit me high') but kept him in line ('You hit me low') Mmm...
what is life but a reality vacation?...... this song its really beautiful but kinda sad///
