What started as a whisper
Slowly turned in to a scream
Searching for an answer
Where the question is unseen
I don't know where you came from
And I don't know where you've gone
Old friends become old strangers
Between darkness and the dawn

Amen omen, will I see your face again?
Amen omen, can I find the place within
To live my life without you?

I still hear you saying
"All of life is chance
And is sweetest, is sweetest when at a glance"
But I live
I live a hundred lifetimes in a day
But I die a little
In every breath I take

Amen omen, will I see your face again?
Amen omen, can I find the place within
To live my life without you?

I listen to a whisper
Slowly drift away
Silence is the loudest
Parting word you never say
I put I put your world
Into my veins
Now a voiceless sympathy
Is all that remains

Amen omen, will I see your face again?
Amen omen, can I find the place within
To live my life without you?

Amen omen, will I see your face again?
Amen omen, can I see your face again?
Amen omen, can I find the strength to live my life
Amen omen, amen omen, amen omen

i agree with ondisplay. this song is much sweeter and more meaningful when thinking about someone who passed away.

also couldn't it be about losing a really close friend? losing someone who's been there for you through the break ups and the deaths, is equally if not more tough than a break up.

this is the sweetest, yet saddest, song ever. it's about a break up....breaking up with your one love.

amazing lyrics; it really pulls the listener in to what he's feeling

Cannot believe only two people have commented on this song. One of the most genuinely soulful performances you will hear by a modern artist. If you don't believe me go to 3 mins 43 secs and close your eyes until the end. But don't do that, because the song is a work of art and the emotional build-up throughout is incredible.

Obviously it's a break-up song, but you don't have to go through a break-up to feel it.

I don't like all of Harper's work, but this is raw, unbridled stuff. A song for a lifetime.

This song is a beautiful and moving piece of music., and one of the best on the album. Maybe it is about a breakup, but it makes me think that perhaps someone he loves has died. "can i find a place within to live my life without you", they're such sorrowful lyrics. Either way, it's a really intense and moving song.

Yeah i think this can be applied to relationship and death. I try to get away from the mindset that most music is about love....but i find this song sweeter when remembering a peron that has passed away

i used to be a serial ben-basher, but this song changed my entire perception of his music. it draws away from his other music and ends up being a beautifully crafted piece of music. the inclusion of the piano and cello really accentuate the mood of the song, which is generally greiving. i agree that this song is about loosing a friend, from the fact that it is outlined in the lines "old friends become old strangers". loosing friends that mean so much to you can be the hardest thing in the world. ben's voice is suited to this song, its raw edge communicating the pain of loss. great song!!!

A good friend of mine died in a car crash last year and every time I hear this song I think of her - I find that I sing along to a lot of music but I just can't sing along to this one because it just makes me cry. I think that Ben Harper hit on something here that speaks to the deepest part of people's emotions - I guess everybody has experienced pain and loss and can relate to the sincerity of his words.

Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
