I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they're blowing
As free as the wind
And hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning

More than this
You know there is nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
You know there is nothing

It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like a dream in the night
Who can say where we're going
No care in the world
Maybe I'm learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning

More than this
You know there is nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
You know there is nothing
oooh aaaah
More than this
You know there is nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
There is nothing
Ooooh Ooooh Ooooooh Aaaaaaah Ooooooh

Great cover version of the original by Roxy Music. Nice music video also. The song is saying some of the little things in life are so much more important than the usual things we think of.

to me this is saying that there is nothing more than this refering to that so special thing that really makes you happy about the fact that you are alive. personally nothing better than being with her.

    My Interpretation

This song is to me a praise of the present, like a modern Carpe Diem. We have to accept life as it is, enjoy it as it is, the moment is precious since it is all we have. We shouldn't be wasting life worrying about its meaning and requiring further explanation, as there may not be any. Like the "Fallen leaves in the night", we can't say we're blowing and it shouldn't matter. This song is about not clinging to delusions, but the general tone is positive and life affirming. It invite us to be "as free as the wind" with our own human condition.

    Song Meaning

I'm surprised by the other interpretations in here. I just started thinking about this song because I heard it in a store today, and was reminded of it. Then I started wondering what it was really about, so I read the lyrics. To me, it's obviously a song about a relationship breaking up because both parties know it's going nowhere. Just look at the phrases.

"I could feel at the time There was no way of knowing"

"It was fun for a while There was no way of knowing"

"More than this You know there is nothing"

In other words, even at the beginning of the relationship, the singer doubted it would go anywhere, and now it has reached the point where there is nothing more than this. Haven't you ever found a significant other, only to go along like things are great for a while, then come to the realization that it has gone as far as it's going to go and it's time to break up because there is no more?

Upon thinking that, and then reading some other interpretations in here, I thought maybe I was nuts, so I did some more reading. Apparently, songwriter Bryan Ferry wrote this on the heels of a breakup in a relationship.

So, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is not some introspective commentary on life, being happy, or anything else. It's a "goodbye".

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
