"Tracing" as written by and Mayer....
Do you ever get the feeling
That we started in the middle?
Or have you ever had the sense
That we've been lying just a little?
I mean come on
It's not like we've known ourselves that long

And I can't say I really blame you
For being bored with the beginning
Always staring at the score
To figure out who's barely winning
But don't you know
There is a reason strong move slow

And I'm okay
If you're okay with wasting time
But when you trace
You always see the bottom line

We are tracing
I hope you know
We are tracing
And if you want to know the moment
I knew that I was still alone
I found I never learned your number
I only stored it in my phone
You'd think by now
I'd know the shape of calling home

And I'm okay
If you're okay with wasting time
But when you trace
You always see the bottom line

We are tracing
I hope you know
We are tracing
Were both alone
We are tracing
We are tracing

Did you ever get the feeling
That we started in the middle?
Or have you ever had the sense
That we've been lying just a little?
I mean come on
It's not like we knew ourselves that long

General Commentthis song is about relationships and how people jump in the middle, move fast, do everything that you'd expect to see in a relationship of about 6 months in 2 weeks. you pretend that you're in love because you both want to be, you never memorize the number you just say what's your number... put it in the phone, never dial, just select the name and send... tracing is just following the lines of the relationship before that you're trying to emulate. the bottom line is the fact that it will never be that... yaaaa!

General CommentThis is one of the most amazing songs he has ever done... it just speaks to me so much. Incredible live too... I'm not gonna lie, I cried when he did it!

General CommentI'd never heard of this song till I found it here, which, trust me, is quite odd, but you're both right, it is amazing!

General CommentThis song is on the Bigger Than My Body Australia Single, which you can get pretty cheap on ebay. It also has one of my favorite John Mayer songs - his cover of Radiohead's Kid A.

BTW, I think I'm a little slow, cos I can't really pick up on the meaning of this song - like "you always see the bottom line". What am I missing?

General CommentI think this song is about a relationship that is kind of fake. The two of them are almost pretending to be in love because they want to be. He points out that they really haven't known eachother for very long and that "there is a reason strong, move slow".
The part about not knowing her number by heart is just more evidence that he isn't really in love with her. Eventually the bottom line is that they don't know eachother that well at all. And he's ok with that. As long as they both know it.

i could be completly wrong though lol

General Commentyeah i agree with mayerhavemybabies ...lol sounds a little wrong from me but anyways. i think it\'s about a relationship that is kind of fake but there is hope they can get together (strong move slow).
i\'m not very sure what he means by \"tracing\"

General CommentIt does sound like the fake relationship that several of you described. I think tracing goes along with that. It's the difference between drawing a picture and tracing a picture. If it was real, they would be "drawing" they're own relationship. Instead they are "tracing" over the lines of the relationship they want to be in.

    "but when we trace
you'll always see the bottom line"

No matter how well they "trace" it, their relationship will never be what they really want. They're always going to see the lines they are tracing over, and those will always look better than what they've got.

General CommentThe line you have as "there is a reason strong, move slow" should be "there is a reason strong moves slow". He's saying that strong relationships are built up over time; you can't just blitz through all of the necessary stages in a new relationship by copying past relationships.
