"Individual" as written by and Greg Graffin....
Individuals run for cover,
For the multitudes of thoughtless clones have reached a critical mass,
Individuals hide in fear, under cover,
Sheltered by the wafer thin veil of intelligence

Individuals, nowhere to be seen

Urbana is oozing like a bloated carcass,
With maggots cooking in the desert heat,
Oozing, with progeny writhing and desperate
For input from someone more determined

Congregating in invisible circles,
Half apart and half apart,
All too aware of the insignificance,
Pushing on with soul and heart

Individuals don't pray for forgiveness,
When pinned up against the wall under siege of persecution,
Individuals command exception,
And accept dichotomy,
Maybe you can't choose anymore

Procreation without gain or purpose,
Languid wills and torped minds,
Catapulted ever faster by the arrow of time

General CommentMaybe it's a cynically critical take about the mass of 'new age' people getting into 'finding themselves' in a half-arsed way. (The reference to 'critical mass' from the bestselling "The Celestine Prophecy".) Although these people believe they are striving for more purpose to life, they are losing individuality.

General CommentJonathan, that is an incredibly intelligent and thought out response! It does seem that in a world where we are told to be ourselves, people cling to ideals and beliefs that mean nothing and takes away from the individuality they are trying to achieve.

But this song also says that these people know what they are doing and what the consequence of it is yet refuse to change (all too aware of the insignificance,
pushing on with soul and heart). It is the need to belong which trumps the need to be oneself. An individual doesn't need to be explain himself because he can accept that there are differences and that you do not need to belong.

General Commentwell put jonothan. metaphorically, if you look at a widow or someone in a veil; the face under the veil is the individual. and despite what they put up on the facade, that underlying tone is what you
are and in your descisions. it could be about being unsure and afraid, so just goin with the flow of time
and live out your life. critical mass from my understanding is the smallest amount needed to produce a kind of c hain reaction. and amny are just swept away in that breeze

General Commentthe clones are people that are the same, to be general. Mainly the same thought process. Not thinking too deeply or personally, ignorant to their ignorance. Doing things to do them or because they think they are supposed to, consciously or not. At least imo. Individuals are people that can see everything they need to. I'd say a person that lives a lie is still an individual because they think for themselves but choose to protection over self expression. The world has turned to shit and everyone has become a clone [this seems WAY more relevant today than in 94] and individuals are the minority, so you better hide your ass cause the clones can overpower you. But you're "sheltered by the wafer thin veil of intelligence" meaning you can at least defend yourself with your intelligence if they attack. The urban world is a rotting carcass because society is starting to decline rather than improve. Take for example how in the early days everyone was brought up christian [depending on location] and it was very strict and the government enforced laws according to some religious rules. People eventually had the freedom to think for themselves. Alot of people are atheists now but it's started a decline; alot of people are atheists because it's "cool", to fit under a label or they just picked it. People who claim to be "non conformists" have become the conformists as they force themselves to not do things because other people are doing them, not because they don't want to. So this rotting carcass of a society is waiting for someone to come and stop the decline "for input from someone more determined". Individuals then contact eachother and take notice of their individuality. I really like the line "half a part and half apart"; I figure it means the individuals are congregating but they are still individuals. Together and divided. They know that there is nothing they can do to stop the decline but they help people that they can in teaching them to think for themselves when possible. 3rd verse, describes being attacked.

General CommentThis song sounds like it is about how America is being ruined by a bunch of politicians who hide from the public and run the show without our opinion or blessing, and how society suffers due to their actions.
