I thought it was too good to be true
I found somebody who understands me
Someone who would help me to get through
And fill and emptiness I had inside me
But you kept inside and I just denied some things that we should have both said
I knew it was too good to be true
Cause I'm the only one who understands me

[Chorus]
What happened to us? We used to be so perfect, now we're lost and lonely
What happened to us? and deep inside I wonder, did I lose my only?

Remember they thought we were too young
To really know what it takes to make it
But we had survived off what we had done
And we could show them all that they're mistaken
But who could have known, the lies that would grow, until we could see right through them
Remember they knew we were too young
We still don't know what it takes to make it

We could have made it work, we could have found a way
We should have done our best to see another day
But we kept it all inside until it was too late
And now we're both alone, the consequence we pay
For throwing it all away, for throwing it all away

to me, its about the singer and his gf, and how they just drifted apart, or split up for some reason. 'remember they knew we were too young we still don't know what it takes to make it'. people didn't think they'd last and he's saying how they were right- they couldn't last together, for whatever reason. i can relate to this quite a lot. maybe they just didn't tell each other how they felt deep down about each other. but whatever it means, GREAT song by the amazing hoobastank.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
