"They Won't Let Me Run" as written by and John Vanderslice....
I was born
A couple miles from here
My family rented me this house
So my family keeps me near

from 1909
My family's run the town
You step out of line, poor sap
Family council will sit you down

one day I fell in love
And of course we fucked around
The morning she threw up
My options were all laid out

I followed through
And now I got two sons
No peace even when you come
‘cause they won't let you run

I got dead drunk
And packed up the pickup truck
Got way out of town, I thought
But sheriff tracked me down

they dragged me home
And the family sat me down
They kept me cuffed up and they roughed me up and said:
“we'll never let you run.”

General Commentjohn vanderslice is absolutely psychotic and i love it.

he has all these alternate personalities and lives in his songs.

"one day I fell in love
and of course we fucked around
    the morning she threw up
my options were all laid out"

^got girlfriend pregnant? she threw up... morning sickness? that makes the most sense to me at least.

General CommentIt's a story, a good one at that. Controlled by the family that keeps you in line and they run the place. You've got everything you need at your feet to be "comfortable." Then one day, you meet this girl and "Oh it's love," you say and there's just some harmless sex, and of course, she gets pregnant and he's fucked and any chance he ever had at escaping has just flown out the door. Follows through, that is, gets married and starts the family and hates it. Tries to leave and they track him down, bring him back, and lock him away in this pursuit of happiness forever.

General CommentReminiscent of Tom Waits' "Frank's Wild Years". Same sentiment.
