"Steps Ascending" as written by and Geoffrey/keeley Rickly....
Steps ascend to a loaded gun
The scent of matches hangs in the air
A lit on flickers out in a heart beat
We don't want to see this,
A flash of light that's letting go of an empty bullet case
By the time it hits the ground he's out of reach
(Let go, let go)

Out reach
(Let go, let go)
Out reach
(Let go, let go)
out reach
(let go, let go)
Out reach
(Let go, let go)
(Out of reach)
The wolves are closing in
There's no room left to make amends
Do you remember when we'd fly that kite so high?

All the time we've wasted
(Wasted)
Spent fighting
(Fighting)
It's blood full of our regret
All the time we've wasted
(Wasted)
Spent fighting
(Fighting)
It's blood and it's running down the stairs

Freeze the frame
To the gun shot and the hole it makes
(A spinning bullet waits in the middle
There's no way to stop it
It will surely hit the mark)
You can try to understand but i'm giving up
Giving up
Giving up
They synapse fires, it's right on time, but i'm giving up
Giving up
(Giving up)
Giving up
Giving up
Giving up
This should always stay out of reach
(Let go, let go)

Out reach
(Let go, let go)
Out reach
(Let go, let go)
out reach
(let go, let go)
Out reach
(Let go let go)
The wolves are closing in
There's no room left to make amends
Do you remember when we'd fly that kite so high?

All the time we've wasted
(Wasted)
Spent fighting
(Fighting)
It's blood full of our regret
All the time we've wasted
(Wasted)
Spent fighting
(Fighting)
It's blood and it's running down the stairs

I ran down the stairs and into the garden
Put both my hands into the soil
In the spring you will bloom
Like her heart through the blouse in the back of the ambulance
As it turned and turned in the streets
(Out of reach, out of reach)

Just one more turn, won't you come back to me?
(Out of reach, out of reach)
As it turned on its red lights
(Out of reach, out of reach)
You were turning into red roses
Red roses
Red roses
Red roses
But I'm not giving up

General CommentThis song is about when Geoff had a fist fight with one of his best friends, and he got so mad at him that he didn't speak to him, and a year later he was shot and killed, and Geoff never got to say goodbye. This was his way of doing it.

General CommentHeh sorry to correct alot, but:
A LIT ONE flickers out in a heartbeat.

Theres no room left to make amends BUT

Will burn in the fire OF our regrets. all the time we've wasted... (theres an extra all the time in there)

A spinning bullet HANGS in the middle

As it turned and it turned down the street, one more turn wont you come back to me?

Anyways... definitely my favourite song from war all the time, and poetics right, but it can still have lots of other implications to different people. Fight with a lover, fleeting life to greg, etc.

General Commentyep poetictragedy5...you are correct. Geoff said it at a show in texas awhile back. REALLY awesome song. a very talented bunch of guys and since drums, bass, and guitars are not my forte i'll have to say that Geoff has an amazing voice. Even in acousic Thurdsay stuff he still sounds really great. Melodic, passionate, powerful whether he's singing or screaming. This band is amazing...espcially live...go see them

General Commentahhh I love thursday. & I love this song. I especially love the last part. Geoff has a very unique sense of writing style, and it's one of the reasons I love Thursday so much.

General CommentACTUALLY.. geoff made it all clear in an interview.. This song is when he got in a fist fight with one of his friends.. then he went on vacation before they made up.. while he was on vacation his friend and another kid were playing with a gun and it went off and killed the kid he got in the fist fight with. They used to play in the kid's attic and geoff said that for years he would have dreams of him running downstairs(steps ascending) from the attic and trying to save his friend.

General Commentomg this song is so beautiful... my favorite part by far is towards the middle-end of the song where everything stops and it's a quiet little tune and then he sings really softly... it sounds something like this:

    "here i... go... to him
here i... go... to him airily???" does anyone know what he says? it keeps repeating in the background when the chorus joins in almost all the way to the end of the song.

General Comment'Theres no room left to make ammends by'.
thats such a powerful line and i think this one line makes this song what it is.
This song reminds me to never let the sun go down on my anger.
If i get in any form of argument, i make ammends right away.
