"Fortune Faded" as written by John Frusciante, Anthony Kiedis, Michael 'flea' Balzary and Chad Smith....
They say in chess, you gotta kill the queen
And then you mate it
Oh I, do you?
A funny thing, the king who gets himself assassinated
Hey now, every time i lose
Altitude

You took a town by storm
The mess you made was nominated
Oh I, do you?
Now put away your welcome, soon you'll find you've overstayed it
Hey now, every time I lose
Altitude

[Chorus]
So divine, hell of an elevator
All the while my fortune faded
Nevermind the consequences of the crime this time
My fortune faded

The medicated state of mind you find is overrated
Oh I, do you?
You saw it all come down and now it's time to imitate it
Hey now, every time I lose altitude

[Chorus]

Come on God, do I seem bulletproof?
Ooooooooooh

[Chorus: x2]

My InterpretationI've always considered this to be about wasted potential--having sought to maintain a high (every time I lose altitude) and looking back with nostalgia and regret that things could have better long-term had they not been distracted (hell of an elevator) by temptation (all ther while my fortune faded.) I feel it's a story of trying to reconcile the cost of instant gratification and glory versus it's cost. The verses speak of being self-defeating (killing the queen and "mating" it, king getting himself assassinated, being famous...for making a mess, overstaying one's welcome, over-medicating, not learning from mistakes.)

General CommentFortune faded, in conjuction with it's video seems to describe a buzz or high from crime. Someone who enjoys the thrill of doing something they ain't supposed to be but making sure they get a way with it. "fortune faded" refers to the fact that eventually luck will run out and once caught, the thrill will end (like at the end of the video). The jibe at God seems to refer to 'the man' or the law, someone in charge and the defiance of this authority is exciting.

General Commenti agree with you, vonni. this song is really great. its like their newest one and is so cool. i love the way RHCP has been around for so long and yet still manages to stay new and never ceases to amaze me.

General CommentThis song hasn´t any meaning. In the Making of FF-Video (MTV) Anthony said something like "Don´t ask me what this song is about, because I don´t know".

General CommentThe lyrics are very much like those of "Lifestyles of the broke and obscure" by Wolfsbane... I believe it's about a man who commits a crime under the influence of a drug, and as he loses the high, the realisation kicks in. "Altitude" suggests he;s high, so losing it means he's in the middle of a come-down.

General Commenti don't know if the song is about an actual crime (like a robery or stuff like that), but i think it's about doing something wrong that hurts the people you live (like drugs or cheating on a gf). he thought he could get away with it on the side, but he got caught, and now everyone is pissed at him.

General CommentYes a definate hit, its on the radio all the time in Australia, I mean this and Can't Stop, By the Way and Zephyr Song being their most recent hits I can say you hear these songs all the time. But Fortune Faded has a new level of exitement, its means so much to listen to it. Every time I hear it it makes me intense and my blood pumps a lot. You have to love the band for making you do that.
