as we cruised across the Canadian border
you reached into your handbag, pulled out a micro-cassette recorder,
started quoting Tolstoy into the machine,
i had no idea what you meant.
i guess i'm supposed to figure these things out,
or maybe it's supposed to be self-evident.
but i've gone feral,
and i don't speak the language anymore.
we're headed deep into the forest, i've got the pedal to the floor.
the engine shudders, like a dying man, when you reach out to grab my hand,
you can bring out all your weapons,
you can't make me go to war.

long winding Canadian highways,
innumerable evergreens.
weather forecast on the AM radio
says we'll be expecting highs in the low teens
when i mouth my silent curses at you,
you can see my breath.
i hope the stars don't even come out tonight.
i hope we both freeze to death.
look at the person i've turned into, tell me,
how do you like him now?
no standards of any kind, no creeds to disavow
i am right here where you want me
do what you brought me out here for.
you can arm me to the teeth.
you can't make me go to war.

This song is typical Mountain Goats "Loved turned cold turned violent" fare, but somehow more refined and beautiful and soft, despite the audio quality being lo-fi and unrefined and harsh.

I love the sheer emotion behind this song. I think maybe this song is about a man who was lied to by a close friend. Someone who manipulated him in to doing something he didn't want to. He's become so angry at this person for literally destroying him, that he wishes them dead. He says he wants them to die, and he curses at them, and he hates them for all the freedom he has been shown by them...but all he does is say he won't let it go on any longer. Nothing more done.

this was my first mountain goats song.. it convinced me to get a music download thing to try to find more.

i dont agree with harvestgloom, though. this is about being in love with someone. its about when you realize that theyre incredibly selfish, they dont really love you. or they did once, and its gone. and you wish to god it would come back, but something has changed and its awful, and theres no way you can get out.

I thought that when I first heard the song too, but analysis into the lyrics made me realize it's nothing more than, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

...and by that I meant the whole "you can arm me to the teeth. you can't make me go to war." thing, not the entire song.

i can relat to this song alot, when i hear it in the car , i just kinda pull my car over and listen, because i am so taken away by it that i cant drive, i just sit on the side of the road and almost cry because it reminds me so much of my gf, who died in a car accident 3 months earlier, the last time i talked to her this song was playing in the background, it was the only time i have told her i lover her

i think this song is a song about a bitter couple of course.

i hear a bitter boy saying all these words to a girl he loved.

"you can bring out all your weapons, but you can't make me go to war"

i think this means, we aren't going to fight. you're not going to win, there won't be a war here tonight.

he is whispering curses into the cold night air.

look at the person i've turned into.

he used to be civil and caring, but he's turned into this raging feral beast, full of disdain for this woman.

    no family happiness :[

i am right here where you want me do what you brought me out here for. you can arm me to the teeth. you can't make me go to war.

all of these lines are amazing. he structures stories in 3 minutes like no other.

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
