"Wet Blanket" as written by and James Shaw Emily Haines....
Falling for the creep the body leech here he comes
Vicious hypnosis, a clenched fist saying it's wrong
To want more than a folk song
Underneath the shaker knit he's a brick wall
She keep falling for the trick vegetariate sing-along
Give a little kick with your fine thigh high

Doo-doo-doo we're on to you
Tearing her down, talking her down under your breath
Making a mess, see she is happy you want to break it

Doo-doo-doo we're on to you
Tearing her down, talking her down under your breath
Making a mess, see she is happy you want to break it

Doo-doo-doo we're on to you
Your phony roots, borrowed guitar
Telling her what to think we are
You the number one wet blanket
Hardly a day goes by you don't try to break down
No I don't buy it
You're still around I wonder why
She just keep...

Falling for the creep the body leech here he comes
Vicious hypnosis, a clenched fist saying it's wrong
To want more than a folk song
Underneath the shaker knit he's a brick wall
She keep falling for the creep
The body leech coming on
Vicious hypnosis, clenched fist saying
It's wrong to want more than a folk song
I'm wrong to want more than a folk song
I'm wrong to want more than a folk song
Underneath the shaker knit he's a brick wall
She keep falling for the trick vegetariate sing-along
Give a little kick with your fine thigh high

Doo-doo-doo

Doo-doo-doo we're on to you
Tearing her down, talking her down under your breath
Making a mess, see she is happy you want to break it

Doo-doo-doo we're on to you
Your bathing suit, borrowed guitar
Telling her what to think we are
You the number one wet blanket
You're still around I wonder why
You the number one wet blanket

"you'll never believe me so why don't you find out for yourself
Then you'll see the glass hidden in the grass
Bad seeds come and go for which you must allow
Sick down to my heart that's just the way it goes"

General CommentTo me this song is about the people I went to college with that I couldn't stand--those "cause people". These are the people who are so opinionated and self-righteous that people can't stand them. I think her friend keeps falling for this creep, and he is one of those faux-sensitive hippies (shaker knit clothes) who is actually verbally abusive to her. He acts like a earthy soul, playing his guitar and preaching his radical beliefs, but he is so caught up in his causes, he can't see that there is a time to drop it and just have fun. He can't stand to see her happy and enjoying life--he probably has one of those "If you're not angry, you're not paying attention" bumper stickers. He thinks music should all have a political meaning and that his girlfriend's friend's band (Metric) is too fluffy because they play pop. I don't know...that's just how I see it. I know a lot of people like this, and they are definitely wet blankets.

General CommentHas anyone ever considered that perhaps this song means nothing at all and is just a string of random words and phrases set to a tune?
    Just sayin'.

General CommentI think you guys are over-interpreting the song by dressing the whole "psychological portrait" of the guy she's talking about. I think in this song she's just talking about that guy who ruins her mood by being a jerk and being critic to her. He just gives himself a style, and it's not what he is for real.

I think its starts to be wrong when you guys start to talk about his political views, nothing in this song says it's wrong to have political opinion and hang hard to them. It's more about is attitude towards her.

"If you're not angry, you're not paying attention": I don't think she's talking about angry people who want revolution at all here in this song. And I would hardly see a huge Elliott Smith fan criticizing people for being always sad/angry about life and society.

General CommentLike many Metric songs, I think this is about being a songwriter. The Wet Blanket, the Body Leech, is the person who judges musicians for label purposes. He is the exploiter, the brick wall, who is stubborn and tells them to take their phony sophistry elsewhere. He is old-fashioned, and talks down to them, with a clenched fist. He tears musicians down. The "she" is not Emily Haines, but another musician being exploited. She is happy he wants to break it (break what? the contract). But she keeps falling for it, she keeps on the "vegetariate sing-along" and thus loses herself. The very pacing of the song and the "doo-doo-doo-doo" shows that there is both anger and a humoring disdain for this reality of today's music. This is, again, not a song about relationships or any such thing, but about the expectation of recording studios and the big labels against the aspirations of artists.

General CommentI get to be the first one to review this song. It's amazing. The song is very catchy and the long interlude is just fantastic. The meaning of the song is quite obvious, it's about an underdog, most likely a close friend who can't keep 'falling for the creep'. Overall, the lyrics are great and the music is very retro at times and then indie and then childish and just full of music style that normally wouldn't go well together but are intertwined in this song beautifully.

General Commenti think ms. chainsaw is correct. I think the line "it's wrong to want more than a folk song" means 'he' makes 'her' feel like she has nothing to aspire to. She shouldn't want anything better for herself. I think that's a clever line.

General Commentgreat song! and I couldn't believe when my sister played this for me. as she puts it "its indie dance pop!" hahaha, well its very good and catchy. I was hooked within a week of listening to this. And I usually listen to Eighteen Visions, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Nora, My Chemical Romance and so on. So this is a pretty big change to what I normally listen to, haha but great song. This and Combat Baby kick ass.
