Your coat and hat are gone
I really can't look at your little empty shelf
A ragged teddy bear
It feels like we never had a chance
Don't look me in the eye

We lay in each other's arms
But the room is just an empty space
I guess we lived it out
Something in the air
We smile too fast
Then can't think of a thing to say

Lived with the best times
Left with the worst
I've danced with you too long
Nothing left to save

Let's take what we can
I know you'll hold your head up high
We've raged for the last time
A place of no return

And there's something in the air
Something in my eye
I've danced with you too long
Yeah
Something in the air
Something in my eye

Abracadoo, I lose you
We can't avoid the clash, the big mistake
Now we're going to pay and pay
The sentence of our lives
Can't believe I'm asking you to go

We used what we could
To get the things we want
But we lost each other on the way
I guess you know I never wanted anyone more than you

Lived all our best times
Left with the worst
I've danced with you too long
Say what you will
There's something in the air

Raged for the last time
But I know you'll hold your head up high
There's nothing we have to say
There's nothing in our eyes

But there's something in the air
Something in my eye
I danced with you too long
There's something I have to say
There's something in the air
Something in my eye

I've danced with you too long
Danced with you too long (doo, doo)
Danced with you too long
And there's something in the air
Something in the air (doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo)

When I heard it, I thought it was about Angela Bowie.

The lyrics are pretty explanatory. He's reflecting on a relationship that's pretty much lost its juice, and has come to a complete standstill. "Something in the air" meaning that there's definitely something different about the relationship although they've kept going for so long, as if two people initially so in love are suddenly strange bedmates.

For no particular reason, I always assumed that this song was about a divorce going bad. Amazing song, though. I love how his voice breaks at the end of the verses. Strange, because this one has been used in at least two films, "American Psycho" and "Memento" which is where I heard it first.

Following the interpretation above, the sentences 'Nothing left to save', 'A place of no return', 'We can't avoid the clash, the big mistake Now we're going to pay and pay, The sentence of our lives' and 'We used what we could To get the things we want' gain a different meaning....as if they refer to a bargain with the devil

Perfect song to end the great American Psycho movie! Pure paranoia from the New York style of life from the White Duke!

Hmmm... Based on lyrics alone, (this is going to sound so friggin' traditionalist, but oh well...) I'd say the song is about ruining a perfectly good relationship by rushing things through. But it might be just daily wear and tear ruining it too, that happens all the time.

good interpretation rabid erica. probably i wouldn't have done better. this is one of my favourite songs, and regarding the subject, i think it's the best assignee.

I'm not sure of why I think this (maybe because Bowie always express occultic themes in his lyrics), but to me the song speaks of the relation between him and another ethereal entity (a demon, if you will)...he danced with it too long (to go back)...and the 'something in the air' express this invisible things that regular men don't know about.

    My Interpretation

After their rupture tears are going through but he says those are not tears, its something in his eye bothering.

He want to say things but he can't even breathe, there is something in the air, may be a horrible feeling that doesn't let him breathe normally.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
