This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. I'm sure she has a specific meaning & it's pretty obvious, Because I've moved about the globe, I can really relate to the lyrics and the feeling of, not just being new/out of place, but 'losing on my own'. It's one thing to move to a new place and not know anyone. It's another to feel like you've lost a sense of home and aren't sure you can gain it back. She says 'as they're watching me' and 'we can be alone'. She wants to be saved. She's tired of everyone noticing, critiquing her. Anyone ever feel they can't make it on their own?

I know for a fact that this song is about the trials and tribulations of home-construction. The line about the 2 x 4's and the 16-penny nails really sums it up for me. Then there's the part about the light fixtures as well as the line about plumbing.
I love this song..I listened to a live version and her voice is both angelic and haunting at the same time. I just discovered this song and haven't listened to anything else for 3 days. I think it strikes a cord because I'm at a point in my life where I am searching for a place to call my home, learning to coexist in a society that if you don't fit into some kind of social niche, then one can feel very alienated, especially in a generation raised on reality television and wack music. Finally starting to realize I can't do it on my own and we all need human contact if we want our mental health to stay stable, but I also need to find those people who are like minded so that it does feel like home
