"Why Can't I?" as written by Graham Edwards, Scott Spock, Lauren Christy and Elizabeth Clark Phair....
Get a load of me, get a load of you
Walking down the street, and I hardly know you
It's just like we were meant to be

Holding hands with you, and we're out at night
Got a girlfriend, you say it isn't right
And I've got someone waiting too

Is, this is just the beginning
We're already wet, and we're gonna go swimming

Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you

Isn't this the best part of breaking up
Finding someone else you can't get enough of
Someone who wants to be with you too

It's an itch we know we are gonna scratch
Gonna take a while for this egg to hatch
But wouldn't it be beautiful

Here we are, we're at the beginning
We haven't fucked yet, but my heads spinning

Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you

I'd love for you to make me wonder
Where it's going
I'd love for you to pull me under
Somethings growing
For this that we can control
Baby I am dying

Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you

Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you

General CommentIt's an OK song but doesn't compare to her older stuff I do however like the verse "We're already wet, and we're gonna go swimming" sound's like the old Liz trying to slip sex into her song while still being popie.

My InterpretationShe met this random guy, and immediately they are both attracted to each other, as if it were destiny. But they realize that this budding relationship isn't right, that they shouldn't be doing this; ha! They've just got their feet wet in this mess, but they decide that they are going to plunge into this thing together.

Everytime she thinks of him, she speaks of him, she can't breathe because she has her litle secret that no one knows about, her amazing guy she just is taken away by. She is realizing that she's falling in love with him, and that eventually, they are both going to have to admit it to each other's faces.

So, they decide that their relationship isn't right, so they break up with their partners. They are still happy, they are glad to be free; they have each other. They feel bad about the whole ordeal, and it slows down their relationship. She acknowledges that it may take a while, but if they could just keep going, keep holding on, that their relationship will become something more. So they are here at the beginning of this, and she compares her feelings at that moment to when she's having sex; no doubt about it, the feeling is the same.

Of course, she is just wants to admit it all, just spill it all out, her feelings to him. But maybe this wondering, this in-the-dark feeling is bliss?

General CommentAwesome song! It's wedged deep in my head, and singing I've tried listening to it and singing it, but I kinda like playing to myself during Social Studies class.

General CommentI love this song, it's so sweet and happy. It's not serious in the least, not very deep but yet it makes such an impact on me.

General Commentthis song is pretty easy to understand, but i like the meaning a lot. she meets this guy and right off the bat, without even knowing him that well, she has feelings him for while she has a bf and he has a gf. they start off cheating on their significant others, but then they break up, hence the..."Isnt this the best part of breaking up, finding someone else you cant get enough of?" shes saying she knows its going to turn into something big, something has to come of it, cause she thinks shes already falling in love.
