Twenty-six years and seems like I've just begun
To understand my, my intimate is no one
When the director sold the show, who bought its last rites?
They cut the cast, the music, and the lights

This is my line, this is eternal
How did I ever end up here?
Discarnate, preternatural
My prayers to disappear
Absent of grace, marked as infernal
Ungranted in dead time left me disowned
To this nature, so unnatural
I remain alone

Twenty-six years end, still speaking in these tongues
Such revelations while understood by no one
When the new actor stole the show, who questioned his grace?
Please clear this house of ill-acquired taste

This is my line, this is eternal
How did I ever end up here?
Discarnate, preternatural
My prayers to disappear
Absent of grace, marked as infernal
Ungranted in dead time left me disowned
To this nature, so unnatural
I remain alone

Give me something, give me something
Give me something, give me something
Give me something, give me something real

I lay strewn across the floor, can't solve this puzzle
Everyday another small piece can't be found
I lay strewn across the floor, pieced up in sorrow
The pieces are lost, these pieces don't fit
Pieced together incomplete and empty

This is my line, this is eternal
How did I ever end up here?
Discarnate, preternatural
My prayers to disappear
Absent of grace, marked as infernal
Ungranted in dead time left me disowned
To this nature, so unnatural
I remain alone

This is my line, this is eternal
How did I end up here?
Discarnate, preternatural
My prayers to disappear
Absent of grace, marked as infernal
Ungranted in dead time left me disowned
To this nature, so unnatural
I remain alone

General CommentI think this song is about Davey as he sees himself, his life and development. The way he feels as a complete outcast, as a person who cannot really relate to anyone and feels like a total different species from the one he "belongs to" when he comes to think about it. The development I’m
referring to is he doesn’t only feel this way different when he thinks about it anymore, it’s become a permanent feeling, something sticking to him he will never get rid off again and he knows so. This is my main idea about “…But Home is Nowhere”, Davey as a being condemned to suffer from his urge to complete himself knowing he will never reach his goal.

It’s about him as an icomplete person not being able to totally accept this. (“I lay strewn across the floor, can’t solve this puzzle, every day another small piece can’t be found”). He tries to find the missing match every day again and again and just cannott stop it, but he feels if he was able to it would mean a huge relief to him. But this makes him turn even more torn, incomplete and put together by pieces which don’t fit at all. Like he is an impossible mixture, like an experiment which cannot work and is designed to fail. He realized that this is what he is, he will never change and he has to live with it (or not live at all). Nobody can take this away from him, even if he found eternal love, his soulmate or whatever, this is eternal( “this is my line, this is eternal”). He realizes that this is him (“my line”) but the bigger part of him tries to fight himself, to change him, tries to do what is impossible, although he is aware of it.
This is why he will never be completely happy, satisfied or complete in any way.
Might also be that this incomplete feeling is caused by his surrounding, the people, who think he is ‘wrong’ and try to complete him but do not find the lost pieces (this might be why he’s speaking in passive “every day another small piece can’t be found”), but I do’t think so. It could be a mixture of both, though…
All this and more of course has revealed to him by now, somehow it does all make sense to him, in a logical way, but he is trapped or more likely lost in his own world so bad no one can get a clue of what it feels like to be him, what he feels, thinks, the way he thinks and so on. Others just think he’s gone mad, because they don’t understand him, so it’s like he’s spaking in tongues,if they dare to listen to him at all (“still speaking in these tongues”). It makes him feel different from all of these people of course because they make him feel he’s speaking another language or thinking in another language which nobody else knows(“while understood by no one”).
So his prayers just disappear, nobody hears him, listens to him, can help him getting this feeling off of him.
When he sings about how “they cut the cast, the music, and the lights” it is very clear, I think, that his isolated position he was put into by the people not understanding him, not seeing him as a human being of the same value as everyone of them, maybe not seeing him as a human being at all, tortures him and causes a feeling of having to live a life with less opportunities, less joy, just less of everything “they” have. He could also see it in such a way as god or the highest power decided he has to live without this, it depends on if you do believe in the existence of god or not. It’s possible by combining, like god causes nobody is understanding him, wanted it to be like this, you know…
So, I guess that’s enough for now, although I could go on like this for ages…maybe I should structure this, but you might have gotten my clue anyway, if you were patient enough to read all of this…err, and one thing: english’s not my native langugae, so don’t bother any kinds of mistakes…hopefully I don’t repeat myself too often…

General CommentI agree with everyone, this song is incredible. It's so epic and heartfelt, you can just see Davey screaming into the mic, trying to stop his lungs from falling out. Killer breakdown too.

I really have no idea about the meaning of the song, apart from the obvious stuff. Like Davey maybe feels alone and disconnected from the world.

This line in particular made me think this,

"Twenty-six years end, still speaking in these tongues. Such revelations while understood by no one"

To me that clearly suggests that Davey has been writing lyrics and singing these songs, revealing so many things that are close to him - stories and emotions, yet they are understood by no-one as he never discloses the meaning of his songs.
But then I can't make sense of the rest of the song..

Of course, with the whole 336/337 phenomenon, it could have a completely different meaning. If you haven't been a regular member of the AFI message boards over the past 2 years, there is no chance you'll understand, unless someone has a lot of patience to type it all out.

For God's sake I'll have a go at writing a brief history of it.
It basically all has to do with Chinese esoteric astrology, and the fact that Davey was born under the chinese symbol of the rabbit, meaning that he can't be reincarnated in death. It all started when the band and the webmaster started giving us all these clues, then the picture disk "336" came out and we were told to research esoteric astrology to understand what it meant.

Soon lots of references to rabbits were being made (rabbits are roadkill in the STS booklet, in the GNG video, small pics on the website, Davey making eerie comments about rabbits on the message board, rabbit in the Clandestine video).

Soon, Gavin (the webmaster) told us the real thing to worry about was 337, and that 336 was just "what comes before". We learned that 336 means death in esoteric astrology, and 337 means reincarnation.
So, after extensive research by particular members of the boards, we found that Davey was born in the year of the rabbit, and these "rabbits" can not be reincarnated.
We think the album has to do with this theory somehow. We also started looking at the order of songs on the album, going into HUGE amounts of detail.

Some of us think that maybe the album represents a life cycle, in my opinion starting with Bleed Black and ending with The Leaving Song Pt 2 (thus explaining the reversed order of the Leaving Songs).
I can't remember it all (I wrote it all out so long ago) but Bleed Black was the birth, or the beginning of this story, and Leaving Song Pt 2 was the extinction of the self (as the reincarnation was not possible). This possible explains why the song ends so abruptly with Davey screaming and one montone note carrying on, but that's getting a bit too vague..

Oh yeah one more thing about this whole theory - it's supported by the fact that the sounds at the very start of the album (before Miseria Cantare) and right at the end (after This Time Imperfect) are the same. Played back to back it's as if there has been no pause.

That's about it. Requires some deep thinking heh.

wow. WOW. amazing. he's been around for 26 years and he still feels as empty and alone as the day he was born, in fact he feels MORE empty and alone as time goes by.

If you're right, that just makes me like AFI about 100% more...and that's saying a lot.

    General CommentManxbass that was awesome.

In my college english class this semester we did this thing with poetry where we plugged verbs and nouns in some order that made sense but didnt at the same time. for example "the birds are boiling in." i think the middle part of this song is done like this.

the idea of that nonsense is that the verbs and nouns that you plug in are all subconscious, so when your done you have a very unique and subconscious poem.

General CommentI love this song...I love AFI...sigh...You know what REALLY sucks though? Getting tickets to what was going to be an amazing show, AFI and Thrice and Thursday, only to have AFI cancel because Davey was having problems with his throat...arggg.
