"I Am The Highway" as written by Chris Cornell, Brad Wilk, Tom Morello and Tim Commerford....
Pearls and swine bereft of me
Long and weary my road has been
I was lost in the cities
Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pity for leaving I feel

[Chorus]
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky

Friends and liars don't wait for me
I'll get on all by myself
I put millions of miles
Under my heels
And still too close to you
I feel

[Chorus]

I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightening
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night
The night

[Chorus]

I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightening
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night
The night

General CommentJust wanted to say that I love this song. It has been a big help and solace during my recovery. Also - I'm amazed that this website has a nearly 8-year thread of persons commenting on this song in a very respectful manner. Almost restores my faith in humanity, and it's a great example of a constructive way the internet can be used. Thanks.

Song MeaningAll the comments I read all seem to be wrong...or at least to compared to how I read this song.

I am not your rolling wheels
    I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
    I am the sky

A relationship where he just a girl's rolling wheels is one like you would have in high school or college for a short stint that was fun but which ultimately ended. A short term enjoyable trip (rolling wheels or magic carpet ride.)

He is saying he wants to be and is her everything-->a highway or a sky.

Then he says friends and liars and don't wait for me and he put millions of miles on his feet to get away and forget about her, but then he says he...

And still too close to you
    I feel

He is saying he still has feelings and wants to be with her, but not just for a fling for whatever short term or more casual relationship the girl had wanted.

    then he says...

I am not your blowing wind
    I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
    I am the night

Not your blowing wing is more reference to not being just a short term whatever to her in his mind. He is the lighting or the autumn moon (husband\father\long term relationship wanting)

    I am the night
    The night

I listen to this song when I'm fed up with people, because that's exactly what this dude is singing about in the verses. At the end of them, though, he throws in that he left someone behind. He's running away.

And the chorus. Somehow he's returning to talk about the person he left behind, but I read it this way: I won't get you there (I am not your rolling wheels), but I'll show you the way (I am the highway). Perhaps he left that person because they wouldn't move on in their life, and he's trying to show them.

    Well....anyone else? =)

General Comment=\ @ the religious babble.
    And a majour wtf @ Evan1055.

I think this song is about the singer feeling insignificant to his significant other and that he leaves her because of it. Like the relationship wasn't reciprocated in a certain sense - "I am not your rolling wheels, I am the highway" - he was bigger than what the girl took him for.

Yet he still misses her - "I put millions of miles under my heels, and still too close to you I feel". And the following choruses are sorta like a desperate plea to have her understand that he didn't feel needed enough, and if she could understand then maybe they'd work out.

    Or something like that.

General CommentAlso in the verses its like he's saying that he's been driven away. And then he says "friends and liars don't wait for me", as if to lump in the same category, like the friends were the liars...

General CommentIMO this is audioslave's 2nd best song after "doesn't remind me". about the chorus is a very fragile point i think:

"I am not your rolling wheels
    I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
    I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
    I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
    I am the night"

wheels rolling on the highway, flying carpets float through the sky and the moon appears in the night.
all of the above means that he (chris) doesn't want to be a tool for uses of others.

    General CommentOk:

    So Here I go:

Song Lyrics of course are always about interpretation. No one knows more than the actual source. LOL. Here, Being Chris Cornell. Here Goes:

This song to me is hits me as Queensryche says "Like a ton of bricks"

To me this sons is all about slowing down and blocking what society and the Media is throwing at us all. In EVERY verse, it says im not your "WHAT"? Your "new invention" as oppesed to the "natural" in us. I am not your Rolling Wheels (movement) I am The Highway (What's seen, What is real, what is what WE ALL KNOW)
I am not your Carpet Ride, ( 60's music BS and DREAMS about Selfish ME) I am the SKY (what we all see: the dream of ALL OF US). I am not your blowing wind (again all about selfishness, blowing and tooting my own selfishness towards a selfish goal) I am the sky, (The sky is what we "see" what we "know" , no movement involved, no goal, only love, the real is") I am not your Autumn Moon: ( Meaning a contrived Holiday/ Idea of what a Season is) I am the Night (the Night is natural/ spiritual gift that is given to us above and just as a gift from us humans has it's precious/ pure reasons, we should not judge the gifts from above (the nights) gifts to us as to bring us to the "real" place in us. :) Hope this hit anyone "as this song sure hit me". !!

General CommentThis song creates a sense of somber majesty and . I believe the song is a conversation between Chris and God (or Christ), with Him showing his power is so far greater than even Chris can imagine. He is there for you no matter how "long and weary" your road has been, having to contend with both "friends, and liars". Incredibly moving song, simply brilliant.

General CommentWrong, atheists know "everything"(they think). Chis seems to question everything. Not at all what atheists do.
