Raise high monolithic statues so fragile as they fall
I am ever enthralled
Gaze, lie and smirk in time, your arrogance will suit you well
'Til fashion is dispelled

As waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
You're going out, going out forever unknown
These waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
(These waves of plastic fame are drying up and I smile)
You're going out, going out forever unknown
(Because you're dying to become forever unknown, unkown)

From above a rain of ashes descends
Anathema I will remain, forever will remain
From below, in my seclusion
Look up to the sky to see paper wings and watch them burn

Without habitation, you'll never find a soul inside
No life, but nothing's died
No lights, but quite the show (Just as long as no one ever knows
All motion is pantomime)

As waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
You're going out, going out forever unknown
These waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
(These waves of plastic fame are drying up and I smile)
You're going out, going out forever unknown
(Because you're dying to become forever unknown, unkown)

From above a rain of ashes descends
Anathema I will remain, forever will remain
From below, in my seclusion
Look up to the sky to see paper wings and watch them burn

Dancing in the rain of descending ash
Dancing on your grave, I'll see you all falling
Dancing in the rain of descending ash
Dancing in your dust, I'll see you all falling
I'd stop it, had you a heart
I'd stop it, had you a heart

From above a rain of ashes descends
Anathema I will remain, forever will remain
From below, in my seclusion
Look up to the sky to see paper wings and watch them burn

General CommentThis song to me is about someone who only does and says things because they think it's what's cool now.

"Raise high monolithic statues so fragile as they fall
    I am ever enthralled
Gaze, lie and smirk in time, your arrogance will suit you well
    'Til fashion is dispelled"
Someone dresses and acts in such a way to be considered "cool. They think they are so high and mighty and that they don't care for others but when they fail they suddenly become so needy and vunerable. They can act as conceited and as invinceable as they like but that feeling of power will end as soon as that particular fad they are trying to follow does.

"As waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
You're going out, going out forever unknown
These waves of plastic fame go out of fashion
(These waves of plastic fame are drying up and I smile)
You're going out, going out forever unknown
(Because you're dying to become forever unknown, unkown)"
As soon as this fad ends, this person will once again end up as no one. And Davey will smile because he saw it coming all along.

"From above a rain of ashes descends
Anathema I will remain, forever will remain
    From below, in my seclusion
Look up to the sky to see paper wings and watch them burn"
He will stand and do nothing as this person fails because they brought in on themselves by pretending to be someone they're not.

"Without habitation, you'll never find a soul inside
    No life, but nothing's died
No lights, but quite the show (Just as long as no one ever knows
    All motion is pantomime)"
Without sticking to one kind of persona no one will ever find out who you really are. You cannot die because you've never truly lived. You have no knowledge of what you are doing but you pretend you do and exagerate everything you think that particular fad is about, ending up looking quite stupid. It doesn't matter as long as no one finds out, you can just happily do what everyone else is doing to be cool.

"Dancing in the rain of descending ash
Dancing on your grave, I'll see you all falling
Dancing in the rain of descending ash
Dancing in your dust, I'll see you all falling
I'd stop it, had you a heart
I'd stop it, had you a heart"
This is how Davey feels about that person's failure. He's happy enough to "dance" on the metaphorical "grave"(the old fad they swore to live by). The last part is like him saying that they should just try to be who they are instead of someone completely fake if they actually cared about themselves.

This is a great, upbeat song and I really think that it has nothing to do with 9/11 but maybe he did use that incident as a metaphor for something completely different. Oh, and shame on you people who thought that Davey was sadistic enough to dance on the graves of the 9/11 victims simply because you don't know him. That's really dispicable to hear coming from fans of his music.

General CommentI think it's about WTC, but i think too that Davey wrote this song maybe before 9-11 happened. maybe he knew that WTC is like plastic fame... but my first opinion is somekind of doubts....

General CommentThis song is about conformity and fads.

No one got the Icarus reference? Fly too close to the sun and you'll burn. Hence the rain of ashes. So and so became too conceited, and is now dead. "Dancing in the rain of descending ash, dancing on your grave" is kinda a What goes around, comes around thing. This song is amazing. Lyrically / musically. I'd stop it, had you a heart.

General Commentthis song is awesome and my favorite on Sing the Sorrow. i was a little worried when AFI signed to Dreamworks...i thought maybe they'd sold out, but upon listening to the new CD, i see there was nothing to worry about. AFI is still incredible.

General CommentI think this song is more about a person than a fad. We see it every day, don't we? There's always someone who thinks that they're "the bomb", so to speak. But you can see straight through them. They have everyone on them, but you know that it'll pass soon and they'll be back to being 'forever unknown'.

General CommentSome say this song was about Pop Punk bands or Rappers. But Davey isn't shallow enough to insult bands throughout his music(this Eminem-ish). I Agree with Coker100, it is about a person most likely.

General CommentOk, well i think this song is about a relationship with someone special who treated him like shit or did something devastating to him. The last part reinforces this.

On the other hand, the chorus makes me very much think that this song is about religion. I think he may be saying that he sees that religion doesnt make sense or that belief in God is useless. When it says "From above, a rain of ashes descends" it sounds like he may be saying that Heaven is "burning". Then he mentions Anathema, which os a person who is looked down upon or condemned, especially by the Church. Then he says "From below, in my seclusion" saying he is maybe looked down upon, or maybe under heaven (not with God). The "in my seclusion" part could mean that he is alone where the majority believe in God or religion and he is alone, or secluded, with his beliefs.

General CommentI can see the religion thing. Says religion's useless. Could also be seen as saying that heaven is hell. I don't know. I'm not big on religion. Maybe I'll come up with another possibility.

Just think about it... doesnt that make a lot more sence?
"All motion is pantomime"... how everyone was just in shock after it happened...
