Under twenty thousand tons of brick and stone,
She carries all the weight of her own world,
But somewhere deep inside,
Beneath the cartilage and bone,
Beats the battered heart of one little girl alone.
She is sweet, like sugar,
But she is bitter like the broken sugar pot.
Dad says that she can be anything she wants to be,
She only sees what she is not.

(Chorus)
Disbeliever, underachiever,
Disconcerted with the way things look from here,
Disinclined and disinterested,
Nothing in your world seems clear.
Disbeliever, underachiever,
Don't you shed another tear,
Little Sister, broken heart resistor,
It's not like that over here.

With the Blanket of Security,
And the mighty force of her own will,
Treading water in her little pink pajamas,
She is treading water still.
Hopelessly hopeless,
and she is swimming,
further into the sea.
Thinking she's substandard,
While all the while,
She is beatiful to me.

She is strong and silent,
She is blunt and shrewd,
She thinks that nobody loves her,
If she only knew,
How much we all have missed her,
We are praying for you, my little sister.

To me this is a very beautiful, very encouraging song about a little girl who thinks nobody loves her, that she has nothing to offer anyone, yet doesn't realize how much she is loved by her friends and family. I also especially like the accordian ^_^

Beautiful song. I see it so much in my friends and in myself and Reese put it in words and to a tune that just hit me hard. Amazing

This song is about me and everone else that ever feel like they don't believe in themselves. The hard live...and every pain you feel, loneliness, your own broken heart...the sweetness some people see in you, the bitterness you see in yourself. But somewhere is some friend that see all through you.

Reese started this as kind of like his personal band, so It's probably about his sister.

    "Little Sister, broken heart resistor"

"Dad says that she can be anything she wants to be"

"We are praying for you, my little sister"

All these show that it's about his sister.

This may be about his sister, but I think the word is also being used in a more general sense... to give a sense of belonging to all of those "little sisters" in our lives that don't know that they are loved.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
