The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
never say never, is this forever?
never say never, nothing's forever
no more questions, i have an answer
forever is what we make it
but i won't sit back and take it
sound, thought, words and actions
looking for your reactions
it's not a game
not even
looking at my soul for what you want me to say
but death is drawn to me
it's how i choose to be
motivation takes the fall and dusts off
how i choose to be
so now the planks are all set up, and i'm walking down
i thought that we'd start something right this time
what a fucking time
salute to sight and sound, cause i'm walking down
you can fuck off this time
what is left of love if you can't trust me
hearts go for hearts but hearts just missed
kiss the kids cause i'll just make you gag
why'd you point at me? it's just me
lost in your smile, lost the loneliness at least for a while
and i stare at incomplete ways, that the loneliness
still stays the same
now the obvious unwinds and you're obviously still untied
in your mind all the rest is doing fine
you still know just how far that you need to go until it all
till i subside with the other ones that fell behind
asked me to dance, but i danced wrong so we sit until
the sap is on
and ruins my line about how i want this song
hands through windows, fists through walls, cause i
couldn't tell
and now you'll never know just how much
how much i felt for you that fall.
never say never, nothing's forever

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
