"Good Man" as written by and Shannon Sanders India Arie Simpson....
I remember the first day
I met you
we were so young
you were a blessing
and there was no guessing
you were the one
Love is so crazy
We had a baby
and said our vows
That's when you told me
should anything happen
I can hear you now
You told me

if the sun comes up
and I'm not home
be strong
If I'm not beside you
Do your best to
carry on
Tell the kids about me
when they're old enough to understand
tell them that their daddy was
a good man

First anniversary
remember we
chose a star
And as i stand under it
I can't help but wonder if
You see it where you are
For whatever reason
You don't see the seasons
Change again
Go there with peace of mind
We'll meet on the other side
Cause true Love don't end
and baby

if the sun comes up
and I'm not home
be strong
If I'm not beside you
Do your best to
carry on
Tell the kids about me
when they're old enough to understand
tell them that their daddy was
a good man

Two eyes
looking
up at me
Pointing to a picture like where is he
Mamma are you OK
What did the paper say
To make you cry that way
it said your Daddy lived for you
and your daddy died for you
and I'll do the same

if the sun comes up
and I'm not home
be strong
If I'm not beside you
Do your best to
carry on
Tell the kids about me
when they're old enough to understand
tell them that their daddy was
a good man

General CommentI'm confused about what this song means. The second verse (starting with "First anniversary...) makes it seem like the man is alive, but in the third verve (Two eyes...), it sounds like the child doesn't know who his father is. So what is going on? Can anyone help?

General CommentThis song is about a man and woman with a family. She is remembering when her husband brought up the topic of death. He wanted to tell her that if he died to tell their children about him when they were old enough. I think this whole memory comes from the picture of her husband that her child asks about. She is also remembering when they spoke about if one of them dies and she is reminded of happy things too like their wedding and the birth of the children. I hope this helps you think about this song is a different light.

General CommentThis song is on the soundtrack to that Mel Gibson's movie...We were Soldiers, Ithink is the name. It about a wife reminicingabout herlife with her husband.

She starts with i remember the first day.... talking about how they met. Then she goes on to their first anniversary. She ends it with the present, with him dead.

The two eyes that are looking up at her belong to their kid and the kid is asking why is she so sad and asking who the guy in the picture is. In the end the purpose is to tell the kids about their father and for them to know that he was a good man who died in battle for his country. "your daddy lived for you and your daddy died for you.."

    General Commenti think...

i think what India is saying is... that the girl and the guy met one day, and fell in love, and had a child. and the guy asked her to promise her if one day he isnt there any longer. then she would remain strong for their children. as the song goes on, i believe the man died, perhaps fought for his child and his country "your daddy lived for you, your daddy died for you". and perhaps he passed away at an early stage in the child's childhood. and so one day as the child asked about his father, his mother retells the story about their father and how he passed away, and how he was a good man and fought for their country...

    great song
