"Here Comes September" as written by and Juanita Stein Ben Lee....
Yeah I'm your lover,
I could scale your city walls,
Though there were others
You never left me at all
Love paved our way
With initialled sidewalk streets
But here comes September
And we both know what that means

Sometimes it's out of our grasp
Not everything's made to last

If that's you way you wanna remember
Well that's the way you gotta remember
But I won't cry now
Here comes September

It's gonna be winter
But I guess you'll never know
'Cos in California
It doesn't snow

Sometimes it's out of our grasp
Not everything's made to last

If that's the way you wanna remember
Well that's the way you gotta remember
But I won't cry now
Here comes September

If that's the way you wanna remember
Well that's the way you gotta remember
But I'm alright now
Here comes September
Here comes September

General CommentI think this is about two lovers, and they loved each other a lot. I think he left to go to America (yeah Australian band) and this is sort of a song to tell herself, 'I'm alright now, here comes September' which in Aus is spring so symbolic of a happier season? I'm not sure I just kidn of thought that up. It's certainly a sweet song like a sort of defencive song or 'don't cry anymore' song.

General CommentYou have to look at WHEN this song was made: 2002.

The last time the world had had a September, it included a single day where the entire world gathered as one to watch 3000 innocent people die and when the world changed for the worse and forever. The remainder of tht month was dominated by fear and confusion, for everyone all over the world.

In this day and age, younger people might be inclined to think that 9/11 was just another terrorist attack; an occurance that, unfortunately, seems to be a dime a dozen in this day and age. But it wasn't. It was THE terrorist attack. It changed everything. the pre-9/11 world was a differant, safer, brighter place.

In fact, it had such an impact that, for AT LEAST the 12 months that followed, "September" was a word that had dark vibes attached to it. As we approached September, 2002 the memories of what had happened the previous year grew stronger, in many ways, we "went back" to the sense of horror we'd felt the previous year. Profound discussions about our memories of "that day" and about what our world had morphed into in the subsequent year abounded in the first 11 days of September, 2002. I remember having dozens of serious conversations about it.

Considdering the date of release, it's hard to imagine that Waikiki wasn't thinking about 9/11 when they wrote a song about "September". Especially when they talk about "remembering" and say "I won't cry".

Searching around, I've found other lyrics pages for this song that include a third verse - though I can't find a version of this song where it's actually sung, so the lyrics might be fake.

But if they aren't, then they all but clinch it that this song is about 9/11. They are lightly veiled criticisms of war and brutality, and a lament for a "sad, sad day"...
