Surprise, sometimes, will come around
Surprise, sometimes, will come around
I will surprise you sometime, I'll come around
Oh, I will surprise you sometime, I'll come around
when you're down

General Comment"I will surpise you sometime, I'll come around, when you're down"

that has got to be the most simplistic, intense and defining line ever in a song

and from a discographic point of view, this would be the first song in their first album

what a way to start a career

General CommentHow does anybody attempt to figure out what a song means that has effectively only one line, and an obtuse one at that? I mean I love this song but it could mean anything at all.

General CommentPersonally, I believe that the lyrics to this song were designed to be ambiguous, seeing as the song seems to be more built around the atmosphere and mood of itself.
Of course, none of us are Paul Banks, so none of us know. So until Mr/ Banks himself gives you an explanation of the song, I suggest you stop shooting down ideas. They all work because the lyrics are so wonderfully open for interpretation.
The ex-girlfriend theory works. The William S. Burroughs theory works. The drugs theory works. They're all basically centred around someone or something that appears when you least expect it and changes things, even in the slightest of ways.
But personally, I think the God theory is actually pretty brilliant, and a little less cliche than relationships or drugs. It's a very unique way of thinking of God, at least in a lyrical sense. It emphasizes the mystery of God. It's sort of like God only does so much so that it seems it's done nothing at all.
As for all the people that have been shooting down the God theory without a second thought, I hope you realize that you are no better than a bible-thumping Christian. You see, you've all degraded the beliefs of others and imposed your own upon them. Sounds a little fascist to me. Religion is never the problem, it's the people that use it to gain power. And for the record, just because somebody's Christian doesn't mean they believe in some giant man with a beard that lives in a castle made of clouds and rules the planet. Personally, I believe that God is simply fate. An entity that appears and changes things when you least expect it. But if you disagree, whatever. Do what you want, it's not like your beliefs are affecting me at all. But no, it varies from person to person and if you're smart at all you'll realize that it's the moral that counts, not the story.
In conclusion, stop hate, love music. Live on.

General Commentgreat song... one of the best of the last decade in my opinion (and Interpol made some other songs that are among the best of the last decade!)
I can't even express the feeling I have when the drums appear at 0:40. Sometimes I listen only these two seconds 10 times in a raw and I keep it in my head for the whole day... The bass and guitars are perfect, the structure of the song is so brilliant...
And the lyrics are so minimalist! It's reduced to one line which is the core of the song. To me, it's just about a man taking care of his lover. Surprising her by his presence and his support, especially when she's down...

General CommentFirst off this song is as haunting as they come, sure genius on the part of Interpol. I have no idea what the song means and what the intent is here. But for me, the line "I will surprise sometimes", reminds me of my realtionship with my ex-girlfriend, we had some rough periods, but sometimes a good little act of love suprised her, that is what I take away from it anyway.

General CommentWhen everyone looks down at you like you are nothing. One day you will surpise them by coming around and making it! That's how i relate to this song through my experiences. cheers!

General CommentI have an Ex Girlfriend, we broke up about two years ago and I still really love her. Every now and then she'll give me a sign that she still likes me but she just as much ignores me. I'm constantly thinking of her and I'm always wondering whether she still likes me or not. When I listen to Untitled by Interpol I think of her

General CommentThis song means so many different things to me..but mostly it reminds me of someone in my life who I wish would come around when I'm down more often.
