"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
"It's getting late"
She said
She touched my face
"Let's stay out late as we can"
We'll drive around the lake
Just a little too fast
My eyes on the lights
Her hand on my shoulder
Yeah, windows down
The wine in our heads
The city lights just blur
The city lights just blur
Let's go out
On a dock
We'll bring a bottle and a blanket
And everything
Yeah, everything
Everything is going our way
We'll drive around the lake
Just a little too fast
My eyes on the lights
Her hand on my shoulder
Yeah, windows down
The wine in our heads
The city lights just blur
The city lights just blur
Lean in to me
We'll drive around the lake
Just a little too fast
My eyes on the lights
Her hand on my shoulder
Yeah, windows down
The wine in our heads
The city lights just blur
The city lights just blur
The city lights just . . .
She said
She touched my face
"Let's stay out late as we can"
We'll drive around the lake
Just a little too fast
My eyes on the lights
Her hand on my shoulder
Yeah, windows down
The wine in our heads
The city lights just blur
The city lights just blur
Let's go out
On a dock
We'll bring a bottle and a blanket
And everything
Yeah, everything
Everything is going our way
We'll drive around the lake
Just a little too fast
My eyes on the lights
Her hand on my shoulder
Yeah, windows down
The wine in our heads
The city lights just blur
The city lights just blur
Lean in to me
We'll drive around the lake
Just a little too fast
My eyes on the lights
Her hand on my shoulder
Yeah, windows down
The wine in our heads
The city lights just blur
The city lights just blur
The city lights just . . .

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
Midnight

Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
yeah it's a great song. they are falling in love. they had a few glasses of wine. they feel free. they dont need to think about the problems, their problems, all they want is to enjoy the moment. they feel free. they are young. they want to do everything and they feel there's nothing they can't do. what could be better than this? it's more than just 'a great night', it's THE night :)
i love minus the bear.... i dont really know what it means to me... kinda just like gettin a little drunk with your girl and have a great night... ?
this song is incredible. minus the bear = love.
i agree with what you've all have said before....let me reinerate one more time though, MINUS THE BEAR is amazing!!!
their lyrics are fucking amazing. they're so simple and honest, no flowery bullshit. this song is about what it's about. drinking wine and driving around a lake with girls.
Everyone and their mother is crazy about Minus The Bear. I didn't think much of them at first, but now that I've given the album a good listen or 12, I, too, love Minus The Bear...well, not as much as their song titles.
Great Song, love the effects
without a doubt minus the bear rock-- and without the pretenses that a lot of bands have. it's just damn good music, that doesn't try too hard. and nothing beats a wine drunk, especially with a new love...
I love MTB lyrics! Other bands can be so convoluted. Each MTB song is a snapshot - a portrait of a moment. I think everyone can relate. Who doesn't want to relive the best moments in his/her life?
i've had one of these nights. it's so nice. minus the bear = awesomeness.
