one bird, one stone. one father, one son. patriarchy like a toll. you have to get out. when you're tired, must be stoned. if you're hyper than you're high. the little bit of joy that you feel knowing you've taken his only son. less interest creates power. a number one.

"This song is the meanest jab I’ve taken at my dad. It feels so good to know that he won’t ever get to see me succeed. He won’t get to be proud of me. It feels good getting high and forgetting that he ever fucking existed. It feels so good knowing that I never took a penny from him after I moved out. I was really heavy in high school. Eventually, I decided to stop eating five times my weight in food every day. When I started slimming down, he and my stepmom accused me of being on speed. They didn’t understand self-improvement. One time he found me reading On The Road and he was like, 'Where the fuck did you get that? Kerouac was a fag and if you read that, he’ll make you a fag, too!' And I just thought to myself, 'My god, you are a dumb man.' At sixteen I decided that was the stupidest thing I’d ever heard. And that was a defining moment in my memory of him. That’s the character that’s getting written about. Just a really soulless son of a bitch."

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
