Stole, stole
Oh, oh
Stole, stole

He was always such a nice boy
The quiet one, with good intentions
He was down for his brother, respectful to his mother
A good boy
But good don't get attention
One kid with a promise
The brightest kid in school, he's not a fool
Readin' books about science and smart stuff
It's not enough, no
'Cause smart don't make you cool, whoa

He's not invisible anymore
With his Father's nine and a broken fuse
Since he walked through that classroom door
He's all over prime-time news

Mary's got the same size hands as Marilyn Monroe
She put her fingers in the imprints
At Mann's Chinese Theater Show
She could've been a movie star
Never got the chance to go that far
Her life was stole, oh
Now we'll never know
(No, no, no, no, stole, stole, oh)

They were cryin' to the camera, said he never fitted in
He wasn't welcome
He showed up to the parties we was hangin' in
Some guys were puttin' him down, bullyin' him 'round, 'round
Now I wish I would've talked to him
Gave him the time of day and not turned away
If I would've been the one to maybe go this far
He might have stayed at home
Playin' angry chords on his guitar

He's not invisible anymore
With his baggy pants and his legs in chains
Since he walked through that classroom door
Everybody knows his name

Mary's got the same size hands as Marilyn Monroe (oh)
She put her fingers in the imprints (ooh)
At Mann's Chinese Theater Show (she could've been a movie star)
She could've been a movie star (oh-oh-oh)
Never got the chance to go that far (oh)
Her life was stole, oh
Now we'll never know (now we'll never know, oh)

Greg was always gettin' net from twenty feet away (twenty feet away)
He had a tryout with the Sixers, couldn't wait for Saturday (Saturday)
Now we're never gonna see him slam
Flyin' high as Kobe can
His life was stole, oh
Now we'll never know (now we'll never, never, never know)

Mm, now we'll never, never, never, never know
Stole, stole, stole
Stole, stole, stole, stole
Ooh-oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Mary's got the same size hands (same size hands) as Marilyn Monroe (oh-oh)
She put her fingers in the imprints
At Mann's Chinese Theater Show (she was gonna be a star, oh no)
She could've been a movie star
Never got the chance to go that far (never got the chance, yeah)
Her life was stole, oh (stole, stole)
Now we'll never know (now we'll never never know, no)

Greg was always gettin' net from twenty feet away (he had game, oh)
He had a tryout with the Sixers, couldn't wait for Saturday
Now we're never gonna see him slam (never see him)
Flyin' high as Kobe can
His life was stole, oh
Now we'll never know (now we'll never, never know, no)

Oh, no, no, no
Yeah, their lives were stole
Now we'll never know (stole, stole, stole)
We were here, all together, yesterday
(Stole, stole, stole)

The song and the music video are really different. In the video the Geek kills himself, Mary gets pregnant, and Greg gets shot. But in the song it's clear that the Geek shot Greg and Mary. The Geek obviously doesn't kill himself in the song because A. It never mentions that the Geek's life was "stole", only Greg and Mary's lives. B. The lyrics say: "He's not invisible anymore With his Father's 9 and a broken fuse Since he walked through that classroom door He's all over primetime news"

how could he walk through the classroom door if he'd killed himself? He walked though the door to shoot his classmates. Also I've never seen a suicide on the news. I don't know about anywhere else but in Australia they aren't actually allowed to report on suicides, only murders.

I'm pretty sure this song is about the Geek being tired of being bullied and invisible ("smart don't make you cool" and "good don't get attention") So he brings his Father's 9 to school. I think the "broken fuse" is in his mind and Kelly means that he's kind of become unhinged enough to want to shoot students. So he does, and suddenly he has all the attention, no longer invisible. He's all over the news and everyone's being interviewed about him. He went to jail "with his baggy pants and his legs in chains"

Mary was destined to be a star, she had the same sized hands as Marilyn Monroe and could have been famous, but that never happened because her life was "stole" when the Geek shot her.

Same with Greg, he could have been a huge sports star but that was "stole" when the Geek shot him.

This is such a sad song, and the "think before you act" message really fits because the people who bullied the Geek didn't think about how it would affect him and how it would affect Greg and Mary. If people had respected him more none of it would have happened. Really makes you think.

Anyway that's the interpretation of a 15 year old girl. :)

    Translation

I guess we all have different interpretations of this song.. I am a little puzzled about the video & song together, but I'm not too sure that he shot Mary and Greg. Brian shot himself and Mary found him in the bathroom stall. He's now noticed and "everybody knows his name". People were bullies towards him, so now everyone is all sorry and guilty for whatever they did to him. He's no longer invisible. Sometimes people do things like this to get noticed. It's crazy, but I know a few people who committed suicide to finally get noticed. It happens. As for Mary.. Her life was stole, because she got pregnant. Her dreams of becoming a movie star is sort of broken, because getting pregnant was a setback for her. Although having a baby isn't a negative thing, for her age and time, it was. I'm not sure if the baby she had was Brian's like some said. But if you watch the video carefully, she was the only one that didn't make fun of him at the lunch tables while the white dude and Asian chick were pointing at Brian. At the courts, Greg got shot by the guys that walked by. Why? Hatred and jealousy of course. Competition turns into anger and anger turns into hate in most cases. And Greg had a tryout with The Sixers, so there's going to be some jealousy going on there, because maybe the other guy didn't get the spot that Greg did. They had potential, but Life "stole" it from them. Sooo many different interpretations of this song, but this is what I came up with. Nonetheless, this song hits and makes me teary-eyed 'cause this actually really does happen in our world.

I'm pretty sure the guy at the beginning's life is all screwed up because he's bullied so much. So he takes his abusive father's guns and commits suicide in the bathroom.

    ENTER MARY:

She hears the gunshot, and runs in and sees the kid dead. This REALLY screws her up, and she starts 'rebelling'(? is this the right word?) and she becomes pregnant in high school, ruining her chances of becoming famous.

Greg is playing basket ball when an opposing gang comes around their turf and they shoot him while he's vulnerable.

All in all.. I REALLY like this song, Kelly Rowland's voice is amazing. I was hooked since the 'Same sized hands' part, her voice on that note is absolutely perfect.

Completely relying on the lyrics - I get the impression that it's about a kid who shot the two other kids, cause of 'his fathers 9' and the bit where it talks about 'his baggy pants and legs in chains', it sounds like he's being put in jail for it. Why would his legs be in chains is he commited suicide? I think the video just gives a slightly different message cause it's a slightly easier thing to film about.

Apparently the music video and the actual lyrics are completely diffrent but they still manage to find a common ground. I agree with SASEKO, Mary wasn't pregnant from the guy that commited suicide because that would not cause her life to be stole, there are plenty of mothers raising a child without a father, but i do think her life was stole based on the fact that she was the one who witnessed the death, she had dreams of being something bigger, the guy killing his self caused a chain impact. Being that he killed his self mary had to witness it, if you noticed how she came across before at the begining of the video (A carefree girl who seemed like she had everything figured out) but after she heard that gunshot and walked into the bathroom to see his body she became emotionally scarred, trying to get rid of it she must've questioned her whole life...

Has anyone wondered she might have been one of the kids that saw him getting bullied and done nothing, she possibly blamed herself. She started doing things to get over that day, ultimately getting pregnant. She forcebly had to give up her dreams, she probably will get there some day but for now she realizes she has bigger responsibilities. (compare her dressing at the begining of the video)

This is my understanding for the video:

The "smart kid" came into school and killed himself in the bathroom. Mary was never mean to him like the other kids, and her life won't be the same, not only after seeing the kid dead but also for getting pregnant. She most likely isn't fortunate enough to have someone to watch her baby while she tries to become an actress, so her movie life is over in that sense. Some people are saying Greg was the dad of Mary's baby, but in the video the baby was white...which leads me to believe it could have actually been the smart kid's baby. It also could explain why she was so upset and crying in her own bathroom. Greg was definitely killed by kids that were gang members, and not by the nerdy white kid. The lyric about the smart kid walking through the classroom doors and everyone knowing his name now doesn't necessarily mean he is still alive and going to jail. Everyone in the school would still have found out his name after committing suicide and he'd still be all over the news. But I also can understand peoples' point of view that the song could be different from the video. Either way it's a great song/video and very touching and leaves an important message.

    Here's what I think:

In the video, the kid with the glasses was a good kid, smart, played the guitar well (He might have stayed at home playing angry chords on his guitar) and had good intentions like the song said. But was treated poorly and bullied to the point where he couldn't take it and snapped. So he shot himself in the school maybe to leave some guilt with the students for pushing him.

The song: Same story but different scenario. The kid instead started a school shooting. When she said, "everybody knows his name" means now everybody knows him for what he did and he's no longer invisible like everybody else use to treat him. Also, "He's all over the prime-time news" and "baggy pants and legs in chains" means he on the news and went to jail.

Scenario 2: The girl in the video was pregnant, ruining her chances of stardom or something

The song: I think he did shot her "her life was stole".

scenario 3: Another boy who is a star basketball player playing in the park with his friends, he saw what might had been a old rival. they both exchange looks meaning they weren't on good terms. Resulting him getting shot and killed.

The song: The good kid might had shot him as well or the same like the video.

The connection: Different scenarios, but it result in tragedies that happens to kids and teenagers. School bullying leading to suicide or homicide (school shooting). Pregnancy and young girls, and bright or talented students.. athletes like the boy was getting killed. Stuff like this happens everyday, and like she said. Lives get stolen because of this.

I love this song, she did a very good job. Hope she make more songs like this one day

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
