(J. FergusonSloan)

You, I wish I knew you better
Then again I can wait 'till next September
Slowly buying time
These conditions make me restless
Then again I admit that this will test us
'cause everywhere now
I can see the number one followed by the nine
I wonder if a year or two will matter because I'm...

Dreaming of you, all day
Hardly seems appropriate
Just drifting through, all day
No one seems to notice it

You, I dreamt the seven towers
Were slowly falling down
And in the last remaining hours
Still everywhere now
I could see the number one followed by the nine
Just this once I think that I might cast the rules aside

Dreaming of you, all day
Hardly seems appropriate
Just drifting through, all day
No one seems to notice it

Everyone's behind us
We don't dare lead the blindest
Still the promise of the victory
Eliminates stakes against me

Dreaming of you, all day
Hardly seems appropriate
Just drifting through, all day
No one seems to notice it

You, I wish I knew you better

    Song Meaning

fromadistantsun, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think the lyrics are from the point of view of a college professor who is attracted to a 19 year old student. He also references 'next September' and "I wonder if a year or two will matter..".

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
