In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. i used to think this song was about a girl who was obsessed over a guy (the singer) and when the singer says "But you weren't listening when I told you everything That you need I ain't got You should be gone by now but you're not" he was saying that he just wanted her to leave him alone. but after i listened to it yesterday now i think the singer cheated on the girl or something and he feels terrible about it. but the girl loves him so much that she stays with him and he feels so bad that he says "you should be gone by now but your not"
also i wanna say that smash mouth is such a better band then people give them credit for. people just think theyre one hit wonders but they really do have great music. i actually didnt even start listening to them until 2 summers ago when i saw that there self titled album was in a used CD bin at FYE where they all cost 25 cents. im really glad i bought it and i wish people would give smash mouth more credit
