when you drive a nail through all that's good
the carpenter becomes the wood
if my concentration sounds like wreckage
it's cuz i got a new feeling, every thirty seconds

we put a monkey up in space
and i know exactly how he felt
looking at a latticework of stars
missing his brothers back home
too much for a post card

mercy, have we gone too far?
who put all these criminals in charge?
did they win, or just hold all the cards?
i'm leaving my place in L.A., i'm gonna live in my car

surgery girls, from the USO
flown farm fresh
pure as snow
hand me that flask i just can't take it
she has the eyes of my mom but she was turning me on now i'm fading

i've got duct tape all around my heart
i've got a satellite dish to julienne my mind
200 channels nothing's on
but those network news can make your eyes see blonde

mercy, have we lost our way (have we lost our way?)
did we come down the ladder from the apes? (o those lonely apes)
will the beard of the prophet be assuaged?
i was putting my shit in the car when the copters came

they put a monkey in the White House
and his uncle in the movies
now the real monkey wants a re-count
he just couldn't believe they were his own family with those values

mercy, pick up your guitar
we'll need a lot of heroes for this war (pick up your guitar)
"will the last band please bring the flag?"
cause no one's rocking the boat and some kids here said they want to dance

General Commenti think 'i've got a satellite dish to tune me in my mind' is actually 'i've got a satellite dish to julienne my mind'. listen and see if that's what you hear. thanks for posting this.

General CommentThis song is great. It's fast, catchy, and downright hillarious. nothing is off limits to blake! Blake owns me.

Song MeaningThis song is very clearly about the Bush administration and the lead up to the Iraq War (which started after the album came out). It also references the bandwagon way in which the media and even many musicians jumped on board to sell the war.

My guess is that "and his uncle in the movies" is a reference to the "Planet of the Apes remake that came out in 2001, and in general, the monkey references are probably b/c of Bush's skepticism about evolution.

The line about "duct tape all around my heart" is a reference to the idiotic suggestion made by someone in the Bush administration (John Ashcroft? or Tom Ridge?) that we could protect ourselves from a chemical weapons attack by putting duct tape around our doors and windows.

In general, the song seems to be about Blake's reaction to 9/11 and his reaction to the nation's reaction to 9/11 and his reaction in general to all the crap Bush had pulled and was about to pull and about how so few people seemed to be openly protesting what was going on. It's a pretty transparent (but also clever and entertaining) protest song.
